white tongue

i have noticed recently that my tongue is white and kinda slimy. i have been on antibiotics for a couple weeks. first flagyl for a bacterial infection, now macrobid for a UTI. im 22 wks preg so im currently prone to vaginal and bladder infections. could the antibiotics be making my tongue white. i finish the antibiotics on saturday. should it go away when i stop taking them? also i have been having a lot of mucous in my throat and i feel like i constantly need to swallow. i have a dr appt on june 3rd should i just wait it out til then and if it doesnt go away ask about it or should i ask sooner?

Re: white tongue

hi...when my tongue looked like yours sounds, i went to the dr. and actually had a yeast infection (also called thrush) the strange part is i think they gave me flagyl to help it...did you have it then or just with the second antibiotic? i do know that muliple rounds of antibiotics tend to kill good bacteria as well as bad bacteria in your body, allowing the overgrowth of yeast, so it does make sense.hope this helps...kel

Re: white tongue

hi there again,

i don't remember feeling like i had something in my throat...but i know my tongue hurt and looked ridiculous...i took anitbiotics for yrs to help with acne problems and fought yeast and thrush both for yrs...i think only one time did i actually have to see a Dr. because my tongue was just covered in white coating stuff and i remember he gave me a prescription of tablets that i let disolve on my tongue a few times a day...the other times it did clear up on its own after i finished antibiotics...hope yours feels better...kel

Re: white tongue

Antibiotics do alter the flora in your mouth and can allow opportunistic microorganisms to flourish. The white coating on the tongue does sound like candida albicans. It should resolve on its own, and I'd also try to avoid sweets which they thrive on.
