fish oils and how much should I take ?

My mother has the beginning stages of Alzheimer's. She has refused to take Aricept and I heard that fish oils help with Alzheimer's. If so how many miligrams should she take a day

Re: fish oils and how much should I take ?

People with Alzheimer's disease tend to have low levels of a brain protein called LR11 and about 15% of people with Alzheimer's carry a genetic mutation that reduces this LR11.

LR11 helps clear the brain of 'amyloid precursor protein', essential for production of the brain-gumming beta-amyloid plaque that clogs the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease.

In live mice and in cultures of human brain cells, the researchers found that the fish-oil compound DHA causes brain cells to make lots more LR11. This being the case, fish oil should be started AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and as EARLY as possible with diagnosis (or before if you think your pre-disposed!!)

from what I can gather, if you give equal amounts of Omega 3 coupled with equal amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids (which are found in corn, peanut and sunflower oils) this can be of benefit.

There doesn't appear to be any 'dosage' requirements, other than trying to keep a normal 'healthy' diet that include Omega 3 and 6.

Goodluck!

Re: fish oils and how much should I take ?

Hey, that is good news for me! I have been taking Omega 3 and Omega 6 fish oil capsules for years, for other reasons (dry eye), but if they are helping me to ward off AD, that would be great. I never heard of this connection before.

Thank you for your response. So let me reflect what you said. She should take the Omega's in equally parts. Should there be a certain dose?

I am glad that I have been taking them for sometime (for Fibromyalgia) to prevent AD.

As I said,

And as I'm not a doctor, I can't recommend any kind of dosage other than what I have researched that says "equal amounts". So I would read the labels on the packaging as to what they recommend and take equal amounts.

Cheers
