Re: Try to go off PPI...acid comes back 10000x's worse!!

Thanks for the tips! Seems I am not the only one, unfortunately.
I have tried (or should I say had to) taking other things in addition to the PPI. There are some days where the acid reflux/gastritis/stomach burning & nausea are so bad I have to take Pepto or Tums in addition to the PPI. My doctor also prescribed Sucralfate to help heal the stomach lining but after a couple of days the stomach pain was so bad I had to stop. He also prescribed Domperidone (sp?) because he thought my stomach problems may be due to gastroparesis (slow emptying stomach). The side effects listed scared the daylights out of me so I didn't even bother taking them.
As for the person that said to break the capsule and take the beads inside..I am taking Pariet (Aciphex) and they come in a solid pill form with the "time release" coating on it. So that probably wouldn't work.
I have heard of the DGL Licorice mentioned on the digestive board, but have no idea where I would find that!?

Re: Try to go off PPI...acid comes back 10000x's worse!!

I just went off Prevacid 2x/day (been on it several years) to Nexium. The change coming off the Prevacid was torture. I had major reflux symptoms that I had never experienced before and was really sick for the first couple weeks. After a month, I still have symptoms I didn't have on the Prevacid. At this point, I don't know if my symptoms are as a result of the Nexium or the acid.

Before on Prevacid: felt no symptoms, but tests showed acid coming up was flaring up my asthma. Symptoms of reflux before Prevacid for me were a chronic cough and belching.

On Nexium: MAJOR heartburn, belching, nausea, diarrhea, coughing, and asthma attacks. It has gotten better over the past month, but symptoms are still present.

I can't imagine what I would be feeling like going off the PPI's all together.

Do any of you get these symptoms missing one or two days of your meds?? I got an upset stomach when I missed a day. I don't know if maybe I must have eaten something bad This is all new to me. Thanks!

YES! I can tell right away when I forget to take my pill. The stomach burning is outrageous! I have had to miss a few days taking them for a test or something and within the first day the reflux is back.

Does anyone take Prilosec?

My problem originates in my upper chest and throat. I feel as if I have scar tissue down in my throat. I probably do now that I think about it.

If I am off the Prilosec for a couple of days the symptoms come back. I am fine as long as I take one in the morning.
