Sunscreen at daycare

Hi and thanks in advance for your help.

Question... If I apply sunscreen to my child in the morning before school/daycare, does it provide adequate protection during 20-30 min morning & afternoon recesses? Is it necessary to "reapply every 2 hrs" when most of the day is spent indoors? I can't seem to find a clear answer on this. (We use SPF 50 block and let's say the UV scale at recess is a 9 or 10.)

I'm concerned because my child's daycare will no longer apply sunscreen/sunblock. Will my morning application last all day? I can't count on the school to reapply in the afternoon anymore. Maybe a recess sunhat is the way to go.

My children (5 & 8) are fair skinned and they burn & freckle easily. (One is a blue-eyed redhead.) I really try to be vigilant about their sun protection.

Thanks again!

Re: Sunscreen at daycare

That's a great question ! I certainly think you must insist your child gets adequate sun protection. Particularly, that afternoon play time. I have one idea that might help...

Our family has switched to the spray on sunscreen (70 SPF). My son loves to spray it on, because he doesn't have to get sunscreen all over his hands. I like it, and use it everyday...it makes my skin feel good, hydrated. It dries instantly, and takes just a minute to apply. It has proven to give great protection for us. Perhaps the school folks would be more inclined to use the easier spray.

A floppy sun hat sounds awefully cute too..I can just see her!

From an old mom, who has been through the entire school system, sometimes you have to fight a little to get what you want. I think this is one of those times. How can anyone argue that sun screen is not important for young children, and all of us. A school caring for toddlers should guarantee your child is safe, and that includes sun safety. Particularly if your child is fair, and at most risk for sunburn.

You sound like a great mom...I wish you the best

Re: Sunscreen at daycare

i'm not sure i'd risk just one application. what is the daycare's reasoning for not applying sunscreen??? that is just plain stupid! i would definitely fight them about that one! or i'd have to find another daycare for my kids.... you know, one that actually cares about my child's well being!!! sorry, stupid people make me irritable and a daycare that refuses to put sunscreen on children is stupid.... and lazy too! sorry. i hope you can get this resolved!!!
