Post coughing at night

I have been coughing ever since my surgery which was three weeks tomorrow. They did an xray of my chest two days before my surgery and everything was clear. I'm afraid all of this coughing will loosen my screws or do other damage.Has anyone else had this coughing problem? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, gsouth

Hi there,

I coughed the same way, day and night, but the nights were worse because i would choke on my own saliva...

after 3 weeks i started taking some alcohol-free cough medicine that wouldn't interfere with my other medications (not nyquil type meds) and it got better but didn't go away...

didn't get the condition cleared up until my doctor changed my meds for high blood pressure... apparently one of the rare side effects of vasotec, prinivil, etc. is coughing...

i would inquire about the meds you're taking and the more unusual side effects they could have...

hugs

sandra

My cough dissipated after a time!!

Not sure if you are a smoker!!! But,if so!! Hello!!??

If you remain concerned, or if the cough worsens I suggest you call or see a DR.

Anyways~~~~~

If you're taking an BP meds, how long have you been on it? Is it an ACE inhibitor? Check on your meds, all of them, on a website like http://www.rxlist.com
or any other one you find doing a search. You can also go to yahoo or google and enter the name of your meds and lots of info will come up. I always ask for the info sheet on any meds prescribed to us but even so, the coughing wasn't included in the side effects of my BP meds because it's a rare side effect and they only include the more prevalent ones.

I also suggest you hydrate, hydrate, hydrate... always take a water bottle with you wherever you go, plus lozenges or peppermint candy. During that phase of my recovery i barely went out anywhere but when i did i made sure i had plenty of those items PLUS i used 2 pads because the sudden cough would make me pee on myself too! Anywhere i sat i would place a folded towel just in case i coughed so i wouldn't ruin the chair or sofa or car seat.

i'm telling you, it's hard enough to heal from the surgery without having to deal with the other stuff... but you'll be much better as time goes by...

if you find that your BP meds are the culprit, see you doctor to get them changed... also, if you can, visit the newsgroups that are dedicated to high blood pressure... that's where i found out about the coughing reaction to my meds...

hugs,

sandra
