Kava Kava isn't any more bad for the liver than most psych drugs they have today. Sometimes the damage isn't so obvious, sometimes it is...Serzone, an antidepressant, is a good example of one of the more obvious.

When my doctor first prescribed Prozac I decided to take St John's Wort instead because I thought it was more 'natural'. I took it for about 6 months and I think it helped in some way, but I had a really bad experience with it when I ran out of supplies one day. I was in South America and couldn't find a pharmacy that sold it - and after a couple of days without it I felt TERRIBLE. My anxiety hit me with a vengeance and I thought I was going to go completely insane! I could barely function until I got home and bought some more.

So...I then decided to go back to the doctor, who prescribed Paxil. I stopped the St John's Wort and started the Paxil and have been on it ever since. I believe that for me St John's Wort and Paxil are both effective, but that the side effects/withdrawal from St John's Wort are just as bad as those with Paxil. And I feel more comfortable taking something that's prescribed and monitored by my doctor.

Guess everyone's different though!

Drew H, you've stated some half truths and false claims. St. John's Wort is only said to be ineffective in treating SEVERE depression. The main reason is that St. John's Wort takes 2 to 4 weeks for the full antidepressant effects to be noticed and those with extreme depression need acute relief. You said Kava causes liver damage. That's a half truth at best. The liver damage associated with Kava is the result of people who have UNKNOWN liver problems before taking Kava OR they were careless enough to take Kava along with alcohol or prescription meds. You said that most of the pharmaceuticals today are derived from natural sources? WHAT? That is NOT true. And the main reason the pharmaceutical industry took over what used to be an herbal practice of medicine is because botanicals can not be patented. However synthetic meds CAN so there's much more $$$$ to be made from them. And geez, why should they worry about the harm done by these drugs when the PROFIT is so sweet.
