Post Coughing fits, few seconds unable to breathe....

I have asthma but it has never been severe. However I became sick in the last 2 weeks and I will have coughing fits in which I'll find myself absolutely unable to breathe and heaving for air for at least 5 seconds, maybe more. I went to the doctor and he gave me some advair, albuterol and singulair (standard stuff I've always used), but I think it may be something else. I've never been left unable to breathe, it doesnt feel like it's my lungs, more like my throat is closing up.

It continues further and I am going to the hospital, any ideas as to what this may be? Thanks.

Vocal Cord Dysfunction maybe? Or possibly panic attacks...

Not really sure.
