Yeah, it's important not to eat after 8 pm if you go to bed around 10 pm. Give it at least 2 hours. Plus you can watch what you eat. I had a bad acid reflux and had to take nexium for it. But since I changed my diet I haven't taken one since 3 months back or so. Don't eat a lot of greasy or spicy food. Try to find the less greasier of spicier option. Coffee and sodas make it worse so avoid those. Chocolate is bad too for it contains a lot of fat. You can do a lot just changing your diet. That way there's no need to eat medicine all the time plus the great thing is the food you eat is a lot healhtier. Good luck!!!

Hey 32skater,

I have reflux and sinus trouble. Reflux can be classified as GERD (which is more heartburn) or it can be classified as LPRD (Laryngopharyngeal reflux. LPRD is different from GERD. In LPRD the acid is backflowing all the way into your throat and larynx. Your esophogus can tolerate acid to a certain point, but the tissue is your throat ans sinuses cannot. It's like giving your larynx a chemical burn. Do you have a lot of throat clearing and excess mucous? I was diagnosed with GERD a year ago. In June, I started having drainage at night. I developed fluid on my ears. Mr regular md said it was allergies and put me on Allegra. All summer I battled these "allergies". Finally, Iwound up with severe bronchitus. I went to my Gastro for a regular check-up. He refered me to an ENT who also said my sinuses were clear. My voice box was extremely irritated and secreting excess mucous to protect it. It's my reflux causing all of it. I have researched the heck out of it, because my dr wants me to consider surgery or the new enteryx procedure.
Great web sites: www.nycornell.org/ent/Laryngopharyngeal.reflux.html www.voice.northwestern.edu/larynx.html http://ent.medicine.ankara.edu.tr/english/patient/voice/gerd.html www.entcolumbia.org/lprd.htm www.sandiegovoice.org/lpr.html

Good Luck to you,
ACB

ACB and others that have responded to my message!
Thank you very much! So nice to converse with
someone that knows what you are going through.
Basically, I have already all that has been
suggested outside of raising head of bed. I don't
eat the spicy foods, eat plenty of time before
bedtime, do not do chocolate, etc. etc. Our diet,
is basically, very good, I believe. We are big
on salads (with lots of veggies in it) plus a
side of veggies. Never do sodas, etc. So far,
I do not have trouble with the throat, and this
has been going on since approx. last May. Daytime
is usually pretty good, but today is not one of
those days. Ha! I do sound congested and
sometimes have a hacky cough. I am not a smoker,
either. Trying to do over the counter meds as
they have some good ones out. So strange with
having something like this hit you, isn't it?
I was not abusing my eatting habits before this,
either. Hope to hear more from you as you have
been very helpful and trust that you are doing
well, now. Thanks

32skater,

Glad info. was a help to you. You should raise the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches. Books work well. I did raise my bed when all this was finally diagnosed. It has helped. I take two Prevacid a day. One in the morning (1 hour before breakfast) and one in the evening before dinner. I also use Gaviscon extra strength. Prilosec is now an over-the-counter medication. You should ask your Dr. about it. My cough is now mostly in the morning when I get up. It is much better now than it was all summer. I go back for another recheck with gastro in Nov. I am considering the fundo surgery or the enteryx procedure.

Hope you find relief,
ACB
