From what I have read, the bacteria that causes Atrophic Rhinitis really messes up the sinus tissue. The damage to the sinuses, either caused by bacteria, or caused by surgery, makes the sinus cavities great places for infection to develop over and over again. I would think that if the sinuses have been damaged sufficiently, and if they are not working very well, then someone could see an excess of mucous or an absense of mucous. I am not a doctor or an ENT, so this is just personal opinion based on personal experience and research.
Everyone has loads of harmful bacteria in their sinuses all the time. It's only when there is a problem with the sinuses when the harmful bacteria can strike!
The crust within your sinuses can also cause major irritation to your sinuses. You would probably see an improvement in your condition if you could flush the crust out of your sinuses. The "upside down" flooding technique I developed would probably be very effective at doing that, and getting those sinuses working again.

If your ENT can't solve your problems, or can't bring you relief, then, to me, it doesn't matter what he says. I'll bet that he does know how to bill your insurance company!
Two years ago, I first started flooding my sinuses "upside down", with peroxide. I then experimented and added a pinch of baking soda, and then a pinch of salt. My sinus discharge was nasty, all bloody and junky. There was so much junk in my sinuses I almost called a moving company to help!
My mucous was always yellow and thick. After my sinus infections were cured, my sinus discharge remained yellow and somewhat thick for many months, until my sinuses healed. Each week my sinuses seemed better and the mucous became less thick.
Right now, my sinus discharge is mostly clear, sometimes with a little yellow, but I only blow my nose about once a week.
I really believe that the yellow or green nature of the mucous, in most cases, is a signal that the sinuses are damaged, or irritated, whether infection is present or not. I went to ENTs for many years, and only found this out on my own. I could never get a correct answer from my ENTs.
In your case, you have an extreme reaction of having very little mucous. I'd be willing to bet that, if you can clean out your sinuses, and get some of your sinus sinuses working again, you might get more mucous than you want!
I am not a doctor. I an not an expert on your condition. If you decide to try my "upside down" flooding process, it would be best for you to check with your doctor first.
Best of luck to you. Hope you can find a solution to your miserable sinus problems.
