Re: Tonsil Surgery THIS MONDAY...Need Advice!!!

I am scared about the pain mostly...I think I can cope without eating...At least I'll lose weight...Thing I am worried about is how long it's going to take me to recover...I'd like to be able to go out for new year's eve...I am also the maid of honor in my cousin's wedding Jan 18...that's a month and 3 days after my surgery...I'd like to be able to have fun...In addition, I am taking the bar exam at the end of February...I can't afford to lose a lot of studying time...

How much weight did you all lose? 15 lbs would be nice!!! I just made my list of foods to get...Lucky for me, my parents are going to take care of me...So I can't really complain...I am going to get baby food (just bananas), gatorade, pudding, campbell's chicken soup with stars, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and icees...I am staying away from the ice cream...And when you are saying it's painful, what kind of pain is it..Is it an ache? a burning pain (the worst kind)? I'd like a description of what kind of pain I should be expecting...

Re: Tonsil Surgery THIS MONDAY...Need Advice!!!

Pain & Coping without eating. Okay, first the obvious - pain - like a sore throat that hurts to swallow - second, the eating - no plans to eat, gatorade is good, but not for the first few days - it will burn your throat - as I said before ICE CHIPS, ICE CHIPS, ICE CHIPS...
JELLO, pudding can get stuck in the throat, making it feel like you can't swallow - which is an awful feeling - therefore, do not worry about eating...VIP IS KEEPING FLUIDS IN YOU - AROUND THE CLOCK.

Going out New Years eve? Well, you are 26 so I can relate to wanting to go out...but, in truth it is best to rest, no talking, plenty of fluids, rent movies.. because Jan 18th will be here..and if you follow rest & fluids, by then you will be dancin' up a storm!

I was out of work for 2 weeks and needed every day. A note of advice, once you get your voice back do not talk too much. I did and I am hoarse...so no talking for me during xmas break. I work at a university, so it will be silence for a while.

Yes, I lost 15 pounds, have kept it off, so that was a plus!

Description of Pain in a nutshell. A severe sore throat that requires you to DRINK LOTS OF WATER, EAT ICE CHIPS & NOT TALK TO GET BETTER!

I promise you will!

Best of Luck to you!

Bar exam at the end of February? Excellent! Congrat's to You!
After the first week, you will have energy to relax while drinking water & chipping on ice...gatorade... I would not do soup...cold is best for first 2 weeks. Of course, see how you tolerate it.

Re: Tonsil Surgery THIS MONDAY...Need Advice!!!

I had my tonsillectomy this past friday!! The actual surgery wasn't as bad as I had convinced myself it would be. The worst part was when I first woke up they had to give me a shot for the nausea I felt. The best advice I have for you is Ice Chips and drink drink drink its a whole lot worse if you don't. This is day 3 for me so far it has been the worst but its not anything I can't handle. If I could do it you can too!!!!!!!! When your getting ready to leave don't get up to fast I did that and I ended up having to stay an extra 1hr and 1/2 because I made myself dizzy. (I want use to the anestetic or pain pills mine are perceset with codeine and thats another thing make sure you take your pain pills as scheduled and you will be fine) My Doc told me if I wanted to eat the best time is right after your surgery when you are still numb. I have heard lots of friends tell me after they had there surgery they went thru the local drive thru if you're hungery and still numb I say go for it. By the way taking pain pills is very nasty if you disolve them in water I found it much eaiser to swallow pain pills in a little bite of jello. I have also heard lots of people say luke warm things were better than cold but for me I preffer the cold stuff such as Juices(not citrus),pudding, jello and sherbert. I don't like ice cream it produces a lot of mucus the pudding isn't to bad if you take water with it!!! Hope I helped good luck sorry if this isn't the best post but Im still a little out of it I just took my pain pills!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!! and remember to relax its not as bad as it seems!!!

Re: Tonsil Surgery THIS MONDAY...Need Advice!!!

As long as you drink lots of fluids you should be recovered soon. I know they say its harder when your older and it is but it wont be too bad unless you get dehydrated. About the weight loss I was told you usually lose about 10 lbs but you will gain it back when you start eatting. Keep me informed about your progress!!

Smile Re: Tonsil Surgery THIS MONDAY...Need Advice!!!

Hi, thanks for your replies! I am getting nervous as the time is getting closer. I have to be at the hospital at 6 am, surgery is at 730am. Hopefully I will be home by the mid-afternoon. My parents are fablous so they are taking off of work tomorrow and tuesday to take care of me. I will definitely update you once I regain my ability to type!!! My dad went to the grocery store today and got me pudding, gatorade, applesauce, banana baby food and icees. I will also stay away from the ice cream because of the mucous and the fact that sometimes it irritates my stomach. I am going to hydrate myself well tonight at dinner. I told my parents I want a big juicy steak for my last supper!!!! Let's just hope I react well to the pain killers...I got Lortab, which is liquid Vicodin I believe...I am also taking 50mg's of Vioxx...That is supposed to help with the inflammation. I will let you know how it goes!!!
