Darvocet

I also posted this on the pain management board -- I have a very MILD case of endometriosis, but occasionally it is severe pain, to where I can't walk without pain, other activities produce sharp stabbing pains, etc. The four OTC meds that I know of (aspirin, acetominophen, ibuprofen, & naproxen) did little. I tried Ultram 50s 2x a day and they worked better, but my doctor decided to prescribe me Darvocets instead. The dosage is a 100 mg propoxyphene + 650 mg acetaminophen tablet 2x a day as needed. Now, is this something to be concerned about as far as physical addiction? When I came home from work last night I did have mild abdominal pain but nothing that really need medicating in my opinion, BUT I felt sweaty and irritable until I took my evening Darvocet. I've only been taking them a for a week! Any comments are welcome.

Re: Darvocet

OK this was on the directions: "Do not stop taking acetaminophen and propoxyphene suddenly if you have been taking it continuously for more than 5 to 7 days. Stopping suddenly could cause withdrawal symptoms and make you feel uncomfortable." Well I guess I answered my own question.

Re: Darvocet

By far the majority of people who take addicive drugs for legatamate pain issues do NOT become addicted to them nor do they experience withdrawal syndrome. If you have never been addicted to a drug you should have no problems. If you have a history of addiction be careful with any medication with an addiction potential. Darvocet has a very low addiction profile. I would be much more concerned about ultram.

Re: Darvocet

Thank you. I was happier that he didn't prescribe ultram either because it is rather new and I have heard (mostly on this board) that it may be really addictive. Whereas most everyone in my family has safely used Darvon or Darvocet before.

Re: Darvocet

Hello,
First, wanna say that bodymechanic makes alot of sense in his advice.
I also agree that Ultram (I've seen it) can cause alot of prpoblems in people, as far as w/d's, etc.
But, I also want to add that I got very addicted to darvocets about 2 years ago.
I had intermittent back pain. I had gotten off vicodins for awhile and didn't want to take that, because I was so addicted.
A Friend had darvocet and gave me some of hers when my back hurt. It really helped.
at first, I took 2-3/day for a few months,, but gradually, I was up to 12-15/day before I did an outpatient detox for darvocet. I couldn't seem to stop.
And w/d was not easy.
Once I did stop, I hurt for 3 months (body aches/pains, fatigue, it was awful).
So, while it's rare for someone to come in being addicted to darvocets, it happens, and it's just as hard to get off.

Murph
