raeisanothing...penicillin is a common allergen; it is frequently linked to skin reactions such as hives. Fortunately, you haven't experienced a life-threatening reaction yet. You should really inform your doctor about the hives, and perhaps you can take something else for the infection. You don't want to risk your throat swelling up to where you can't breathe!

I'm sure this isn't the best news, but be thankful that you are aware of what has caused the hives! I know I would be thrilled to know why I have mine.

I'd say the over the counter antihistamine that has worked best for me (for itching)is Benadryl. It quickly alleviates the itching. Claritin is OTC and nonsedating, but I don't find that it works as well as Benadryl to control the infernal itch. Anyway...if you're sick, you may have taken off of work or school, so hopefully you can take some Benadryl and get some rest.

But...talk to your doctor about the penicillin reaction. Also, the prescription antihistamine Atarax is really effective for itching. Your doctor might be able to prescribe some for you. It, too, is sedating, but it works even better than Benadryl.

Good luck!

Well I'm back, and with a wealth of new knowledge from my allery doctor. Basicly I got allery tested by them applying small drops of allergins(mold, dust, aniamls, trees, food) and then pricking the skin at the drop of liquid. They arranged them in rows and it was kinda cool. They did apply a histimine dot to make sure I was off anti-histamines. All I can say is 15 minutes of them leaving it on, the itch was horrible. After learning a few things I was allergic too,Dust, cat, and mold, and some things I could possibly be allergic to, wheat, beans(including peanut), and lesser extent dairy, (also i say possibly because they tell you they get false positives on food sometimes) I waited to see the doctor. When I talked to him he introduced to me a whole different theory on the cause of my dermatographia. Could it be possible that he was right I was thinking the whole time. He asked my mom if I was born with this condition, when she said no he mentioned how it could be a buildup of susbstances that my body WAS NOT allergic to, but sensitive to, and that I could be stuck in a cycle where my body is not clean of that sensitivity and build up to the point where it goes over the edge and releases all the histamines, which then when my skin is scratched these histamines flow out and cause the welts. So he amazes me with this hope, I know not to keep my hopes high though, Ive had it for 10 years. He perscribes me Hydroxyzine and tells me to take it once at night, then in the morning take 1 10mg reactine and my antacid that I combine with my reactine to block even more histamines, Famotodine(or something like that). He said if we can break the cycle of Histamines we might be able to see better whats bothering me, but at the end he said, lets stop this. So I know i have a doctor to go back too. We'll I'll be darn sure to keep everyone updated. I know there will be some excited people out there.

Im sorry, my repeated sayings of doctor were incorrect, he is an allergist. Also if this matters he refered to me as 3X more sensitive than the average human relating to the effects of skin trauma. That should help give you a sense of my condition. It is a form of hives though, Physical Urticaria.

My son suddenly had hives one day some eight years ago.He is now 21 years old. When we moved to another house it all suddenly disappeared again. This was after many visits to doctors and after taking lots of anti histamine as well as cortizone.

About a year and a half ago, he decided to move. Within a month the hives were back and he was scratching like never before.

He moved back to our house this month but is still covered in hives. He got a new, very expensive, product from a doctor but cannot afford it anymore as his medical aid benefit is used up for this year. Now we are trying again to find some natural way to get rid of the itching and hives.

He gets the hives very bad. His face will become misform , it looks like someone has hit him. His eyes are swollen closed, his lips are swollen. The medical aid will not see this as a chronic condition. He gets the hives all over his body.

I can remember that my mother gave hime watermellons years ago and that it helped to take the hives away.
He ate about 2 thick round slices a day. When he stopped, the hives were back.

I can remember that we took him to a paediatrician one evening, when the hives were also very bad. He gave him an adrenalin injection which took away all the hives in a short time. He said that I should obtain some of these injections and give the shots to him when it becomes necassary. We did not do it as I really can't do it. Is there anyone that have tried this before?

Does anyone now of any other natural products that can be taken? I believe a great deal in Flowers of Sulphur for any skin problems. A quarter teaspoon can be swallowed with water twice a day or a teaspoon full can be mixed with a bottle of Elizabeth Anne's baby shampoo and be rubbed onto the skin. Has anyone tried this for the hives before? It definitely helped me for my acne when I was still at school. When this powder is swallowed, it will even clear up boils.

I am just a mother, feeling very sorry for her son. I asked him to try it but he is very stubborn.

Has anyone tried Essentiale, a liver tonic? Please let me know if it helped.
