Starting another round amox - ? about acidophilus

Okay, here goes. I am starting another round of amoxicillin this time for an ear infection. Two weeks ago it was for a sinus infection. Anyway, my guts still aren't real happy from the last round which ended 9 or 10 days ago. I have some Walgreens brand acidophilus capsules. Active ingredient is lactobacillus - 10 mg. Will this be enough to hopefully combat the bowel problems that occur with antibiotics? Also, it says 1-2 capsules a day. Is that enough while under antibiotic therapy or would you need more? Are there any side effects when taking acidopilus? I also have some Dannon yougurt, but I'm sure it has sugar in it. Is that still okay to eat with antibiotics? Will it still help even though it has sugar in it? Sorry for all the questions. Hopefully someone will have some quick answers since I have to start the amox today. Thanks.

Re: Starting another round amox - ? about acidophilus

Hi, yes, I would suggest taking the acidophilus (the one I take is Webber brand and it has bifidus). Does yours say how many active cells in it? I think you're supposed to take them a few hours before or after the antibiotic. If you do a search on acidophilus with antibiotics, you should find out something.

I don't think the Danon yogurt will hurt, even if it does have sugar in it...it's good calcium.

I hope you feel better soon,
quincy

I buy my probiotics in a health food store. The best ones require refrigeration because the friendly bacteria is "live and kickin'" when it hits your gut.

Re: Starting another round amox - ? about acidophilus

The ones I bought at Walgreens have over 100 million active lactobacillus acidophilus cells in them. It says to refrigerate after opening. I put them in the fridge right away. Will they still work do you think? Do either of you get any nausea from taking them? The amoxicillin itself is making me quite queasy today. I'm afraid to take much of anything and have a hard time eating. I can't believe I have an ear infection. I haven't had one of those since junior high school and that was over 20 years ago!

I'm sure they're fine. Yogurt will help a lot too. I didn't have any ill effects from the probiotics and they helped very much. It prevented diarrhea and a yeast infection when I was on antibiotics recently.
