How did you talk your Dr. into using Maxide? Sulfa allergy is a specific contraindication. I asked my PCP to just try a low dose of HCTZ and she just about laughed at me. My Dad was also allergic to sulfa and took hydrochlorothiazide without problems. I bet I could too but can't talk the Dr. into trying it (even using my father's history).

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help.

So far, I am using 32mg/day Atacand (an ARB) and am titrating Cardura (an alpha blocker)up to 8mg/day (I'm currently at 4mg/day). This has yet to have any lowering effect on my BP.

I was going to suggest chlorthalidone, but a double check revealed that it, TOO, has a cross-sensitivity with sulfa drugs.

Yes I discovered I am allergic to some sulfa drugs, one I believe that is used for bladder infection, ended up with passing a kidney stone and kidneys barely working. As for HCTZ, I can take it, as have been for a long time. I only take 25 mg per day. I tried other diuretics and the electrolites were all depleted in my body, cramps in the muscles, yawning all the time, ect!
