Shorterm antibiotic therapy
I was on Minocycline for years before taking myself off of it about a year ago because my acne had become resistant. I have been 90% clear with the exception of the 'monthly' cyst or two. However, right now I am having a flare-up and was thinking about taking Zithromax, or some other stronger type anibiotic, just for 7-10 days to get me through it. Has anyone ever heard of this or done this>? Do you think it might help?
Thanks!

My derm gave me Zithromax, which is one of the strongest antibiotics out there. It's mainly meant for extreme upper respiratory infections and such.
I tried it for 2 months. Totally useless when I tried it (as far as slowing/stopping acne). I still have 2 packs sitting in a drawer that I never even bothered using.
Sorry, but I don't think it's worth taking the Zithromax. Save that for when your body REALLY needs it.

Re: Shorterm antibiotic therapy
i was on zithro as well, for 14days--for an actual illness, and hoped id clear during that time---nope, no such luck. i think it takes a longer amount of time--4 weeks--for clearing from an oral antibiotic

Re: Shorterm antibiotic therapy
My Internist put me on BCP today - a very low dose of OT. She also wants me to take 100MG of Minocyline for seven days once a month the week before my cycle. I get one or two cysts a month and there rear their heads right when I start my cycle, so she is thinking the will help, but she reiterated to only take it for 7 days and then stop. She also said that if my face starts to clear with the BCP, that I don't have to take the Mino. We both agreed that, for me, topicals are basically useless and just to stick with Klaron, Eucerin Renewal moisturizer and Neutrogena On The Spot only when I need it. When I do have to treat a cyst, I do it with Hydrocortisone cream, Queen Helen's, and Ibuprofen. The last three I had, I was able to keep to get rid of quicker and without hardly any scarring using this method. I know my acne is hormonal because I had perfect, beautiful skin my entire life until my late twenties when I went on Norplant. Since then I have had cystic acne. I would apprecite any information from anyone who has been on Ortho-Tricycline. I am both excited and nervous about trying it.

Re: Shorterm antibiotic therapy
Lucky,
How long have you been off Norplant? I attribute my adult-onset acne to depo-provera --acne/oily skin is a very common side effect. i didnt properly inform myself before and was not told of this by doctors--not even my derm pickked up on it. I have only been off of it 2-3 months, and although the BC im on is helping , yasmin, i fear depo will make this a long battle.
