children's allergies

I know of an 8 year old boy who is getting allergy shots. Is it necessary for him to be taking zyrtec, singulair, azmacort, and flonase for his allergies to and if so why?

It may be very necessary for him to take all that medicine. If he is severely allergic and has allergic asthma, that may be all that's standing between him and hospital admission or worse. Some of us have severe allergies and cannot live without all the meds. All of those meds are appropriate for children depending on the level of illness. Also, allergy shots often take up to two years to take full effect. I've taken them for 33 years without feeling that they do much more than keep me out of the hospital. Flonase and azmacort are inhaled steroids that help prevent inflammation in the sinuses and lungs which can block the airways. Singulair is a leukotrine modifier (or inhibitor, I forget which) and in many people is effective in stopping the allergic process. Zyrtec is a very safe and effective antihistamine.
