Re: Ace inhibitor and cough

I've been on Atacand for a while now, and when my new Dr. saw that I was on Norvasc he said that was one of the more expensive meds. So we deceide to try Enalapril...well the cough was too too much and I switched to Triamterene/hctz...I have had this darn cough for over 6 months....could this be the cause of my cough?...Any thoughts....

Yes, I'm on both Atacand and Triamterene/hctz

Re: Ace inhibitor and cough

Yankeefrank-
I'm confused. Are you on Atacand now or Triamterene/HCT (or both?)

The latter should not cause cough. If it's been six months of hacking away, I would have your doc check it out.

PS- Wait...it's rare, but triamterene/HCT can cause a couple of respiratory problems: allergic pneumonitis, and/or pulmonary edema.

So again, definitely see your doctor about your coughing.

As I have mentioned I use a Nasalcrom inhaler occassionally, and that seems to provide me comfort. I know some of you disagree with using a drug for a side effect from another drug. But Nasalcrom is rather harmless. It seems no worse that taking a diuretic, to combat the edema that some get from the other drugs.

Although it appears I am defending the ACE Inhibitor, I am not. I have not liked either of the drugs I have tried (Diovan or Lotrel), and before I keep switching to a new slew of side effects. I want to make this one work. My goal is to be off of them completely, not find a drug that works (ugh)!

Lastly I do still cough, and it is more at night. I wish someone could answer why, but I'm sure my doctor will say let's not talk about it, let's just switch to another drug, and come back in 10 days, and we'll see how your body adjusts. My next thing I will try is taking it at night. Has anyone tried that, I know it does make sense, but neither do these doctors! By the way I have been on Lotrel since 2/7/04, and there are times when I don't cough at all.
I've been taking an ace inhibitor since 1997 for hbp, at that time I did not know the side effects. Until one day waiting for the bus I began to cough uncontrollably and my legs buckled. I then went to the nih gov. site and prinvil and zestril along with hctz can cause very bad side effects. I finally quite taking them after about 3 years. I was given avapro, but it cost too much, so now I am back on zestric(zestril 20/hctz 25) with very miminal side effects. Of course, I've changed my diet (high fiber low fat) cut portions, and exercise every day walk 3 to 4 miles daily. MY bp dropped from 225 to 120/60. I started taking my zestril before bedtime.

Do you believe taking the Zestril at night has something to do with the very little side effects?
