Re: Beta-Blockers

Jamman-
You certainly seem to have insight into the impact that emotional issues can have on the body. Given that your doctors over quite a long time seem to have ruled out serious organic disease, I agree that seeing a counsellor on a regular basis for a while, rather than your general practitioner, might be a great idea. Panic disorder and chronic anxiety are incrediblyphysically debilitating and life-altering.

The fatigue and lack of energy could be attributed to anxiety, but that's not to say it ISN't the beta blocker, or that the BB isn't making things a bit worse for you.
And of course there's always the problem of fatigue making one NOT want to exercise and then the lack of exercise contributes to the fatigue and round and round we go.

In the past, I had wrestled on and off with periods of depression accompanied by terrible fatigue (of course they always go hand in hand) but when I went on a beta, I became not only more exhausted but every single one of my friends noted: "Hey zuzu, this fatigue is WAY different".
They had heard me complain of "being so tired" before, but on the beta blocker it was beyond fatigue. I was practically immobile!

I wish they had a smilie icon here for "zombie"...I'd type in six of'em!

Anyway, do discuss with your doctor the possibility of trying an ARB down the line,( I feel NO side effects on Diovan)... and psychotherapy is wonderful if you find someone good.
Changed my life that's for sure.

Good luck,
zuzu xx

zuzu, do you have dizziness and spacey feelings w/this fatigue? Also what do you think of hyzaar? I know clnonidine killed me, but my symptoms never went away when i switched.

dback-
Yes, one can have dizziness and spacey feelings on beta blockers as well as the fatigue.
Clonidine is an alpha blocker, known for its sedative effects in susceptible individuals!
Hyzaar is a combo of Cozaar (losartan)- an angiotensin 2 receptor blocker (ARB) and the diuretuc hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ).
I LOVE the ARBS (Cozaar being one of them) because they are virtually side-effect free. However, diuretics, although incredibly effective for BP control, can cause dehydration, or can play havoc with your electrolytes, especially depletion of potassium, which can make you feel exhausted, spacey, floaty, lightheaded, weak, etc. It's important to have your potassium blood levels monitored at the beginning of HCTZ therapy to make sure your levels are A-okay. Also eat potassium rich foods, like bananas, oranges, etc.
Good sources of potassium:
