Angry Adverse reaction to synthroid

Ok, First I thought it was anxiety when I started taking synthroid b/c I was having headaches and nausea that was maybe 2 weeks ago. Now the hell has begun. Im having leg cramps, my arms feel like they are 300 pounds, puffy eyes and lets not forget flushing of the face. Now is this suppose to be going on?
I called the dr and he said that synthroid wasnt cauing that. Well then what could it be? I wasnt havent these kind of problems before taking the pill.So he desides to cut back on the dose.. drops it to 50 mcg from 100.Well needless to say im no better.I had rather stay overweight and tired (hypo )then to be putting up with this..
Sorry for spilling my guts on here , but I needed to vent. Why cant drs treat people like a humanbeing not a scientific project.

Re: Adverse reaction to synthroid

Chances are you are not allergic to the med itself but one of the binders in it, this is common. I'd request a differrent brand of med and see if this helps the problem. Is your dr opposed to the natural thyroid meds, ie Armour, Westhroid or Nature-Throid? Nature-Throid has non allery type fillers.

Hope you get some relief, sometimes you just want to slap those drs.

Re: Adverse reaction to synthroid

A starting dose of 100 mcgs is pretty powerful. Most doctors start at 50 and gradually taper up every few weeks from there. So it might be that if you were very hypo before meds, a sudden "surge" of thyroid hormone that you were missing before may have hit you harder than normal.

I had a very hard time starting on a dose of 75. Had so much joint and muscle pain, my GP ran a gigantic panel of tests looking for the whole gamut of arthritic and connective tissue diseases, all negative. But he's very ignorant about thyroid disease and probably hadn't a clue that meds can do that. The endo who prescribed it wasn't much help either. Eventually, it became clear I couldn't tolerate Synthroid and began taking Armour thyroid. I never got any side effects from it.

I don't know how much you've read about starting treatment, but it often doesn't go smoothly; not many people start taking that little pill and feel better immediately. Most will feel worse for a while and gradually improve as their optimum dose is neared. But as dea4 says, it could be an allergic reaction to that brand. You may do better with another, no matter what that doctor says.

Hope you begin feeling better soon!

Thanks for the input..Im thinking that I must be having some sort of reaction to the binders in synthroid like metioned above.Im calling Monday morning again and if they dont switch me to something else.I will most defiantly be looking for another Dr. This is just ridiculous.

Re: Adverse reaction to synthroid

Oh, one more other thing. Can you just stop taking thyroid medication? Or will that throw your body completely off?
