Bad Experience With "Slow FE"

Blood tests revealed I have B-12, iron, and folic acid deficiencies. I've been on B-12 shots for a year, but they are now going to give them every two weeks.

I tried my one and only iron tablet today called Slow FE and it upset my stomach horribly! I thought I was going to throw up, and even tonight, I didn't want that much to eat. I wonder if anyone else has such a sensitive stomach like mine, and have had a bad experience with this or another of the iron tablets?

Iron tablets are known to irritate the stomach and it is also known that some people can't stand it at all so that injections are needed. You shouldn't hesitate to ask the doctor if maybe you could try another type of tablets otherwise injections are the solution. It's not necessary to receive them daily but weekly or so, maybe together with B12.

Re: Bad Experience With "Slow FE"

Thanks, modrijan-- I get to having doubts about this Dr. He seems to want to crack jokes and act silly more than being a doctor! I can't believe he had the nurse to tell me to take iron tablets! I had an e-mail from a local friend who also can't take them. Not many folks can, I'm finding out. I will definitely ask him about combining iron with the B-12 or in two shots taken the same day or so. I don't know anything about availability of folic acid in shots, but after that sickening day from that iron, I'm leary of taking any mineral pills now! The ol' gut is way too sensitive for these kind of experiments from a dr.

Re: Bad Experience With "Slow FE"

Hi Anxiety Man
I am also anemic and had tried every over the counter iron pill out there. They all made me sick. Finally, my Gynecologist sent me to a Hematologist who prescribed Chromagen. I have to take it three times a day and have had no problems. He told me it dissolves in the intestines instead of the stomach. It also contains B12 and C. The pills are pricey...$75.00 for a month's supply but they brought my iron up from 8 to 12 in 6 weeks and it has stayed there.

Howdy, 'Jazz'! Good to meet you. Thanks so much for that very interesting reply! I'm going to jot that Chromagen down here, and ask my daktari about that. I've got one hypersensitive gut just like my late mom & her side of the tree. Lots of acid, GRD, and I even have a monstrous hiatal hernia, so I can't just gulp down anything. I might could get those with my Medicaid, as they are "gold" Again, thanks so much, jazamine, and we hope to yak with ya' later.
