hey!!

hey! I'm Amanda, 15/tx with asthma. I'm new to these board things but I've watched people post for like a week. I was diagnosed when I was 4 or 5 and since then its jumped from mild to moderate to severe to moderate. so that must mean its going to be mild again soon!!! lol right now I'm on advair 250/50, singulair, prevacid, albuterol (by nebulizer and inhaler),flonase, elidel and I think thats quite enough!!!!! lol

do any of you know any non-medicine, non-herb thingy treatments (i know caffeine is one ) and would I be allowed to take extra steroids with a cold or somethin? like qvar??? I used to take that with Advair when I had real bad astham. my asthma goes crazy with a cold..... I'd ask my pulmonolgist about the steroids but I hate him . neway I look forward to meeting you all!!!!!

o o o!! I forgot to ask! does milk seem to make your asthma attacks worse???/ i feel like i've got a wad of crap in the back of my throat when I do that and it makes it harder to breathe!!!!!

Re: hey!!

Yes, Amanada, milk CAN make your asthma worse especially if you are allergic or, maybe, the best word is SENSITIVE to it. You can have a sensitivity without being allergic, such as increasing the mucus in your throat. I find when I eat ice cream and drink milk I have to clear my throat continuously. About the non-medicine question, I take MAGNESIUM and extra vitamin C along with my prescription medications. MAGNESIUM is a natural bronchodilator and C is a natural anti-inflammatory and antihistamine. They are not a cure all by any means and the results aren't overwhelming, but I do think they help. I know you said, "non-herb" these aren't herbs just vitamins!I hope your asthma gets the "mild" stage also. Take care.

Re: hey!!

Just one question: Is your asthma in control with all these meds (i.e. how often do u get wheezy)?

U should be able to get a prescripton for prednisone when u have a cold. When I had viral infections as a kid, it used to always clear up after taking IV hydrocortisone and pred tablets.

Hi Amanda, I'm Rachel. Hopefully your asthma will get mild soon.

How's Elidel working for you? I'm looking into getting some...

I don't really know of any non-medicinal treatments, besides magnesium as someone already said. I've actually heard that with some people, caffeine restricts their airways further rather than opening them up. The same goes with alcohol.

I'm pretty sure taking Qvar is a good idea for taking with an upper respiratory infection. Check with your doctor first though, no matter how much you hate him.

Sometimes I notice the thing about the milk also, but I'm not allergic to it. I read in some places that it makes mucus thicker and in other places I read that it doesn't. But for me it seems to gather post-nasal drip or something. I dunno.

Take care.

Re: hey!!

Hey Amanda: I have the same thing with milk...also with regular soda. If I'm getting sick, even skim milk gives that feeling of mucus in my throat, and Coke or Pepsi gives me the same feeling all the time. I only drink skim milk (helps with the stomach thing..I noticed you're on Prevacid...GERD???) and only drink diet soda...the kind with Nutrasweet. I do know, after nearly 30 years of dealing with asthma that milk products are not friends. I take many of the same meds you do, and want to suggest that you and your family seriusly reconsider where you live. I lived in Hawaii and my only asthma rescue was epinepherine injections. Albuterol inhalers or nebulizers didn't work fast enough. I had to inject myself with epi, then get straight to hospital for a breathing treatment. Seeing an allergist/immunologist was the best thing I ever did. Once you can identify asthma triggers, you can stay away from them and help control your asthma.
Good luck!
