Post New Here....My Story

Hi everyone,

I am new here - I registered tonight after a visit a few weeks ago when I first started having all the tests.

Here's my story for anyone who wants to read it:

In January I felt a lump in my neck but my doctor couldn't feel it. In April I went back again and asked him and he now could feel it so he sent me for an ultrasound. The nodule was 3.5 cm at that point (May).

I was scheduled for an appointment with an endocrinologist who I saw in July and he did my blood work and scheduled me for the imaging tests. My blood came back in the low normal range (sorry, don't have any numbers) and my imaging showed a cold nodule (now just shy of 4 cm and affecting my swallowing to some degree) in my right lobe and a small hot nodule in my left lobe.

Had a FNA on the large nodule a couple days later (mid august) and those results came back after labour day. Inconclusive. The endo referred me to a surgeon.

Yesterday I saw a surgeon and after much discussion we compromised and he scheduled me for a partial thyroidectomy. He will do a frozen section and check the nodule while I am still on the table. If it turns out to be cancer they will take out the left lobe too. If no cancer, he will try to get the small nodule out of my left lobe but leave the left lobe intact.

My surgery was to be in a couple of weeks but I have asked them to postpone it due to some family obligations in mid-October. Now my new date is November 6th.

I don't have a question exactly, I just thought I would introduce myself as I imagine I will be posting a bit

Thanks for reading if you have made it this far!!

Best of luck with your surgery. I too had a nodule (4 actually, but one very visible). My FNA was inconclusive but had some Hurthle cell presence so with my endo we decided to do surgery. I opted for a total based on family history of nodules and due to the fact that certain cancer types are not identifiable until final pathology--therefore eliminating the risk for 2 separate surgeries.
That turned out to be a good choice since my nodule was diagnosed as follicular carcinoma.
My surgery went great--really no problems--the breathing tube caused the most discomfort post surgery but I was back to business a couple of days later.
I'm now preparing for RAI end of Oct.
Good luck with your surgery and the outcome.

Just wanted to say hello. im gina. I had my 4cm nodule removed along with my entire thyroid. there were 2 other nodules too. its such a hard decision whether to have a total or partial. i had hurthle cells present so he wanted the big one out for sure. i opted for a total because i didnt wanna think of a second surgery. im so glad i did! the frozen section they took during the procedure was "follicular nodule favor adenoma". but it actually turned out to be follicular cancer after all. saved myself another surgery i guess.

good luck with your process.

Hello all!

I too am new to the board, and very frustrated with my doctor! Here is how my story goes>>
I had a baby four and half years ago. I was pretty much the same weight and size prior to becoming pregnant, about 130 to 135, I am 5'7, so that was thin for me.
I gained about 35 pounds with my son which I took most off after his birth, I had about 8 pounds left to go, I had him in January and things were going along fine. In September I had a big weight gain, like 20 pounds, which really freaked me out, I had numerous symptoms and a friend brought it up to me that sometimes having a baby later in life can effect the thyroid. I was 38 when I had him. I did some checking, then finding out I suffered from many of the symptons of hypo thyroid, I was always freezing, hair was falling out, got to the point where I always have to keep it up, constipation, you all know the symptoms, I had the majority of them. Well shortly after I was so tired all the time, still am. Well to get to the point my son is now 4 and half and I have been tested 1 time every six months for almost 2 and half years, the doctor keeps telling me it is "within normal range" never has he said it is normal, but acceptable. I cannot remember my last reading....exactly. What is normal?? My doctor is making me very angry!!
Also my thyroid is enlarged, he admits to that. In this amount of time I have gained 45 pounds, it is so DEPRESSING!! I walk but just have no energy after working all day to the point of not wanting to get out of the chair once I sit down. I tried diet pills, diets, but to no avail and cannot lose a pound!!
I need help!! Besides I told him I have read numerous articles about thyroid cancer and he laughed at me and said it really isn't cancer. I know a woman, much younger than me that had thyroid cancer, as matter a fact it was hereditary in her family. Her mother and older sister had it as well.
Help all!
