Have you had these tests?

Monday and Tuesday I have some tests I have to take, and I'd like to know what to expect. I have to have an EEG, EKG, and an MRI on the brain. I also will have to wear a heart monitor for 24 hrs. Are these tests simple and painless? I have never had them before. If an MRI is like a CAT scan then I know its a piece of cake. The others I don't know about.

Re: Have you had these tests?

The EEG and EKG are short non invasive procedures where "electrodes" are placed stratically on different areas of the body and head to get certain readings.

An MRI is non invasive much like a CTScan.

Heart monitor is non invasive and requires wearing of certain electrodes and straps.

All are a piece of cake.

Re: Have you had these tests?

My only added two cents is if you are claustorphobic at all---have your doctor prescribe you a one-time dose of valium or some other kind of tranquilizer for the MRI. It is much like that CAT scan, except it is a very narrow, long tube. I thought it was just an open "O" like a CAT scan til I freaked out on the nice, poor MRI tech . Lol, I learned very quickly just how much I do NOT like enclosed spaces. BUt other then that, like the pp said these tests are a piece of cake and the best part--there really is NO PAIN!!

To help avoid the feeling being in a tight space during an MRI, close your eyes before entering the tube and keep them shut the whole time. That way you have no clue just how tiny space you are in. I did that and it worked for me.

Re: Have you had these tests?

like the others said, they aren't bad at all. I've had all 4 tests done (the MRI I had done though was not for my brain, but I've had a CAT scan of my brain before). The EEG, the longest part is them putting the electrodes on your scalp... and be warned, you're hair will look pretty crazy after it. The EKG is the simplest and really short, not much to it. The MRI, like others said the only thing is if you are claustrophobic. I'm not so I had no problem with it. As for the 24 hour heart monitor, the only thing you need to know is that you can't take a shower during those 24 hours, so if you need to get one, get one before they put it on!
