"Baby Wearing"

Who here "wears" their baby? Baby wearing is said to put your child in the center of the activity, not the center of attention. By wearing them up at eye level and including them in your daily activities by way of observation it's said that they learn more quickly because contentment opens them up to information, like a sponge.

I wear my daugter all the time, usually in the morning for at least an hour or so while I have coffee and water the plants outside. Then again in the afternoon/evening when she's fussy. She loves it, and so do I because I can get things done without having to leave her in a swing or playpen to get bored.

I have a Maya ring sling, and I just ordered a Moby wrap. I can't WAIT for the wrap to get here. I'm hoping it will be easier on my shoulders.

I can't say enough good things about baby wearing. It has saved me many times, and it makes me feel good to know that she's not sitting by herself in the play pen or something.

Anyone else? What kind of carrier do you use? Having you mastered the art of nursing in it?

Re: "Baby Wearing"

hi north
i have a tomy freestyle carrier i wear it on my front at the moment ds faces me but at 3 months (in a couple of weeks) i can face him outwards so he can see more, ds is so interested in the world he is alwayts looking around being nosey lol (sign of an intelligent child, just like his mommy lol) i use the carrier if ds is being fussy and won't settle and also so i can get jobs like hanging out the washing done. i have also taken ds on some walks in it but my back gets shot so usually dh carries him for walks. i agree it is a good way of being close to ds while having my arms free

Re: "Baby Wearing"

I went to my first La Leche League meeting and everyone raved about wearing your baby in a sling. It sounded like a great idea to me so I got a ring sling. I love the idea of wearing my baby but I cannot seem to figure it out. dd is now 7 weeks old and about 10 and a half pounds. When I put her in the sling I feel like her head is not being supported enough. I found an instructional video on some website and they showed how to tighten it up to make it secure but I can't seem to do it right. I am very upset about it. I was really looking forward to wearing her instead of pushing her around in a stroller.

Do you have any tips on how to wear it? Did it take you a long time to figure it out?

Re: "Baby Wearing"

I'll be honest, learning how to use the sling was not easy for me. In fact, I ended up cussing it out as I took my daughter out of the knotted mess while she screamed her head off. LOL. BUT, it has gotten a lot easier. I also found that the cradle hold was not the best for us. I have large breasts, and to wear her high enough to wear I felt comfortable meant that her head was smooshed into my boobs, making her neck look crooked.

The only thing I can say is to hang in there and keep practicing. Always make sure baby is in a good mood (well rested and fed) before trying it, and experiment with different holds.

My daughter really likes the front hold, where she is upright against my chest with her legs out the bottom wrapped around my waist. You might want to try that one. You can also pull the fabric up so that her head is supported as well.

Also keep in mind that when they were in the womb they were squished into a little ball, so quite often they enjoy being squished into a little ball in the sling too. It's ok if their head is to one side, or if a leg is pulled up (even though we might not like it). Believe it or not, your baby will tell you when it's time to change positions, usually by trying to stretch their legs out.

As for tips on doing it up and adjusting it... make sure the fabric is evenly spread out on the rings, and that the "rails" are not twisted, otherwise it's impossible to adjust with baby in the sling. Practice with a bag of flour in there (seriously, it worked for me!). And do it front of a mirror, that really helps too.

I also just recently orderd a wrap because I liked the idea of it going over both shoulders. I'll be sure to let you know how I like it. That one has no rings, but you do have to tie it on, so I'm not sure it will be any easier.
