Hot Dogs & Cold Cuts

Hi Ladies
I know this question has been brought up before, but I don't have the patience to look for the old thread.
Why are we not suppose to have hot dogs?
I couldn't help it! I had 3 cocktail franks today, they were just smelling soooo yummy, and I went for it. Now I am upset with myself for doing this.
Also, I have not had any cold cuts since I have been pregnant, almost 13 weeks, would it be so bad to eat them now & then (without boiling them, yuck!)?
Thanks for any insight!

Just as with Lunch meats, it can have listeria. I wouldnt worry about it- whats done is done, but I wouldnt do it anymore.

You can eat these, as long as they are fully cooked! I know that raw cold cuts or hot dogs can have listeria, BUT cooking kills the bacteria. So, you can bake, fry, or boil the said above. I usually pan fry my cold cuts in a frying pan (w/o adding anything) until they get a little brown and heated through. Then, I enjoy with toasted bread, lettuce and tomato. YUM!

Re: Hot Dogs & Cold Cuts

I spoke to my doctor about this because I was nervous because I had about two cold cut sandwiches and two hot dogs after I was pregnant. When I told him that I was worried he just laughed. He said that listeria is a concern, but it shouldn't dictate everything we eat. He said if we lived in Mexico or somewhere like that, then he might be more worried, but he said basically there was nothing to worry about. His wife just had a baby 6 months ago, and he told me that all he advised her to do in regards to her diet is avoid fish, and eat things from all over the food pyramid.

So don't stress about what you have already eaten, seriously no harm done. I avoid these foods because I am a worry wort, but I don't stress about it. If we were to avoid every type of food that could have listeria in it, we would not be eating anything, including fresh fruits and veggies.

Hope that makes you feel better!

Re: Hot Dogs & Cold Cuts

I eat sandwiches and hot dogs weekly. The hot dogs are cooked and I have never gotten sick from a sandwich. There are too many other things to worry about. I only eat sandwiches at home because I know I keep my sandwich meat refrigerated, but I just crave hot dogs and love going to Weinersnitzel's to get a yummy chilli dog! Funny thing is, I never get heartburn when sometimes I do just by drinking water...lol.
