Test Results

Can someone shed some light on the following test results? I had an iron infusion if Infed on April 9, and I got some of the blood work back. It looks like some of the numbers went down instead of up.

WBC - 9.3 (pre infusion) 7.1
LY - 11.8 (pre infusion) 14.2
Hgb - 12.5 (pre infusion) 12.4
Hct - 38.3 (pre infusion) 37.3
MCV - 86.7 (pre infusion) 88.0
MCH - 28.4 (pre infusion) 29.3
MCHC - 32.7 (pre infusion) 33.3
Plt - 328 (pre infusion) 36.2
MPV - 5.9 (pre infusion) 6.1

I don't have the ferritin results or the other iron results back yet. It's a little hard to compare these results to other people on this board because I only had one two hour infusion. The doctor isn't sure if he's going to do another one yet. He's also going to check my B12 level. I felt okay for a few days, then I started to get really fatigued and dizzy again. Not sure if it's the iron or something else.

Re: Test Results

So your hemoglobin was normal when you had the infusion? Why did you get an iron infusion... is it because of low ferriten?

I had the Infed infusion awhile ago, only my hemoglobin was at 7.4 and I had no ferriten. It takes time for your bone marrow to start producing more red blood cells and as my doctor told me it would be about a month or so before I really started to feel better. I had more than one Infed infusion (I forget how many actually)..

The amount of time you had the infusion for (you mentioned 2 hours) doesn't really make a difference in things. Every type of iron infusion is different and some can be administered more quickly than others, and it depends on the dose your doc prescribes. I would guess you dose was a little lower because your hemoglobin is already in the normal range and you might be at risk for iron overload if he gave you too much.

Your numbers look like they're all well into the normal range and you have nothing to worry about, except for your platelets... I don't know if that was a typo with the 36.2 --- if your platelets are actually that low that's really dangerous and your doc would/should have done something about it! Otherwise, you're results look good!

Re: Test Results

Yes, my doctor prescribed the infusion because of low ferritin. My hemaglobin has always been fairly normal but my ferritin has been all over the place for the last year. It was 4 when I was first diagnosed. It got up to 23 in about 9 months after trying all kinds of iron supplements. I couldn't tolerate most oral iron. Then within the last month it fell to 11. My doctor was concerned about it, plus I was having terrible symptoms, dizziness, near fainting, extreme fatigue, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath. My doctor says my ferritin should be around 70 or 80 with the infusion he gave me. I think it was 800 mg of infed. By the way, my platelet count was 328, down from 362. I have to wait a couple of days for the ferritin results.

Good luck - I personally have low B12 and they symptoms are very similar.
