how long to wait for exercise?

I was hospitalized all last week, after discovering the swelling and pain in my leg was a DVT and my "heart attack" was caused from a PE. This was all a SHOCK to me, as I am not obese, not a smoker, exercise regularly, and am 20 years old!

Anyway, I know I can't start exercising like I was (my leg is still very swollen and it's painful to walk far distances), but I already miss my exercise routine.

I was wondering how long it took before you could exercise again - one doctor of mine told me wait 48 hours after leaving the hospital, another told me in about six months I should be ready to go. If you don't exercise, how long does it take to feel "normal" again?
