Taking enzymes with fruit baby food

My baby is 8 1/2 months old with CF and struggling with gaining weight. He loves baby food in jars and doesn't like his formula(Nutramigen 30 cal/oz). Does anyone know if he wants a snack after he's eaten, can I give him fruit baby food(applesauce, bananas, pears, peaches etc..) in the jars without giving enzymes? The jars of applesauce say the ingredients are just apples, water and ascorbic acid. I don't want to give too many enzymes, so just wondering if this is a viable snack. Thanks.

Re: Taking enzymes with fruit baby food

Hi, my 4 yr old daughter has CF and as a baby loved mashed fruit and vegies. If the snack has no fat then theres's no need for enzymes.I would call it a viable snack as all children need nutrients from fruit and vegies even if there's no fat involved. They just have to get fat from the other things you give them. Does your child like avocado? There is so much good fat in them. Or put extra virgin olive oil in their mashed vegies. Since my girl was 4 months old I've given her 7ml of flaxseed oil in goats milk powder twice a day just so she gets extra fat (healthy fats) through the day. I've been lucky in that she has always had no problem putting on weight. I go by the rule- if there's no fat then no enzymes are needed and this has worked for me.

Thank u so much. I really appreciate your help. I always thought you need to look at the carbohydrate/sugar too to decide about enzymes. It makes it easier just to look at fat content. My son had blood in his stool around 3 months of age and has been on Nutramigen formula since. They said it was because of cow's milk protein allergy. Do u think he would be okay with goat's milk powder and the flaxseed oil, or can u just give the flaxseed oil by itself? Does it taste bad? This is a great site to have for parent's of cf kids!! So glad to know it's here and there are people like u willing to help!

Re: Taking enzymes with fruit baby food

As you know children with cf have thicker mucus in their body so I try to give my daughter an almost dairy free diet as I find milk products very mucus forming. You can buy goat milk formulas for babies. I mix the flaxseed into the powdered drink as in normal goats milk it floats on the top. I'll keep giving it to my daughter this way untill she's able to take it another way. I wouldn't say it tastes very good on it's own but when mixed into a powdered milk drink from a young age they like it. I would ask your doctors if they think goats milk formula would be ok. They say goats milk is more like human milk and alot of children with allergies are fine on it (would find out first though). If it is fine then as he gets older you can give him goat cheeses and feta's. Wishing you all the best with your little one.

Re: Taking enzymes with fruit baby food

Thanks again. Another quick question(sorry). I bought flaxseed oil today and it says the normal adult dose is 5ml twice a day, which equals 45 calories and 5 gms of fat per 5ml. Is this the same concentration you use for your daughter? Except I know you said you give her 7ml twice a day. I'm excited to try it! I hope your daughter is doing well. It sounds like you've really done a lot of research and have learned a lot of alternative type therapy. Is your daughter also on breathing treatments? My son is on Proventil and he started Pulmozyme in April. So far he's doing pretty well, just needs to gain weight. Thanks again.
