It can be genetic but then again it may not. You need to get your hormones tested. You also need to get a full thyroid checkup. Thyroid issues most often arise after major hormonal shifts eg: puberty for males/females and pregnancy and menopause for females. Thyroid problems can be genetic too or they can arise after a major illness or stress, it's unknown precisly why some have this problem but it's on the increase and even though it's predominantly more females who have this problem, there are a lot of males too.
For a full thyroid checkup you need to ask for these tests: TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and Thyroid Antibodies to see whether you have a thyroid autoimmune disease.
Some people shed abnormal amounts of hair due to stress or anxiety or medication.
Some shed hair due to very low ferritin (iron stores) and even low Vitamin D. How is your diet? do you take multivatins? Can anything be helped in this area.
I'd definitely get a full hormone and thyroid check done and it wont hurt to include things like ferritin, Vitamin D and even B12. All these should be up at the higher end of the lab range. If all is fine then visiting a Trichologist (hair/scalp specialist) might be in order as they only deal with these issues. I'm female and hair shedding due to my hormone/thyroid issues, but first i saw a Trichologist as i wasn't getting much help from other doctors. The one i saw was excellent and uncovered my thyroid condition. He has put a lot of information on the net about hair and you can find it by looking up his name which is Anthony Pearce. You might get additional help there. I found him very honest and not one of those people who just tries to seel you pills and potions.
It's best you do someting about it now rather than waiting too late as sometimes if the hair follicles die off it can be too late. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
