I'm not sure why this is posted to the aging forum but:
See a doctor so he can press on your abdomen and ask you more questions. That's part of a regular examination. No one can tell you what it is other than list possible causes. I don't understand why you ask here instead of just going to your doctor.
That's very typical of gallbladder pain, for example. It could also be pain emanating from your stomach as a symptom of an ulcer. The colon also runs up near the rib cage, and it can be a symptom of painful bloating if you notice that abdomen is expanded during these episodes.
The less likely causes are an enlarged liver pressing on the diaphragm, a possible complication form a previously broken rib, etc.
Out of what I've listed, the most likely cause is an ulcer or gallbladder stone.
