Re-emerging Pain After Wisdom Teeth Removal

My boyfriend had his wisdom teeth removed 4 weeks ago. He spent some time in pain, and was getting better daily. However, in the last few days the pain has gotten severe. He takes an Ibprofen and doesn't even feel the effects. The dentist then gave him a rinse to use in his mouth, but this is not helping. The surgeon who did the surgery is not available unitl next week. HELP Please!!! He's getting depressed from all the pain and 'fobbing' off from the dentist... Does anybody know what is causing him to have this pain? ( it is not a dry socket)
