Need Help - Toothache and Bad Plaque Buildup

I need some help. Back in the end of June, I had a Root Canal done to fix a chipped tooth. I have a Temporary Filling, and at the time, I was supposed to get an actual filling, but because of too much blood, they had to reschedule. The Doctor never gave me Pain Medication, or Anti-Biotics either. The day we were supposed to go, we couldn't go due to Money Issues (They told us we wouldn't have to pay, and then the day of our appointment they tell us we had to pay). For us, we've been having problems with our Dentist Office, because we keep having issues with them whether it's them not telling us to pay money, to medication, etc.. So we went looking for another office, but were told we had to finish the procedure at our original office first. But we're still having setbacks because everytime we go there, they keep increasing the price that we can never afford at the time.

Anyway, it's been 4 months, and I still have this Temporary Filling. However, a few weeks ago, I noticed that I had this bad Plaque Buildup. Unfortunately, I can't brush it off, because the side the Plaque is on on the tooth is the same side where I chipped my tooth in the 1st place. So I don't want to disturb it in fear of losing the tooth, and having some of the Temporary Filling coming off. However, I've also been having Random Tooth Pain that comes and goes. And it's not just on the same tooth, it's also on the teeth in front or close to it. (The chipped tooth is a molar) I also feel some swelling on my gums, but it's not all on 1 side. Rather, it's on random areas on the gums on certain teeth.

I have tried Advanced Listerine, but it made my tongue go numb and actually made the pain worse on my tooth, so I stopped using it right away. I'm worried if maybe I caught some kind of infection, that could have been prevented with anti-biotics, but I'm not sure. The Plaque is also causing me to get bad breath as well, which is annoying and frustrating. The random tooth pain seems to be caused whenever my teeth come in contact with liquid, sometimes warm, but mainly with cold liquid also.

I'm trying to see if I can come in to the dentist's office for a Cleaning and Consultation at least, but it's expensive. We're also trying to get a Hospital Discount Plan so we can pay much less, but it might take a while. I brush 2 times a day, when I wake up, and after dinner, and I use Act Restoring Mouthwash before I go to bed. But I'm wondering if maybe there's something someone can suggest to help me with this problem. I've been under a lot of stress as of late, and I could use some help with this problem.

Re: Need Help - Toothache and Bad Plaque Buildup

I would suggest you try using sensodyne or a tooth paste with a de-sensitizer in it to help with the pain from hot and cold food and drink and I would strongly urge you to start flossing regularly - this will help remove the plaque before it hardens and is more difficult to remove - I find using a water pik is very helpful in reducing plaque as well. Also try using the children's tablets that stain the teeth blue to show you what areas need to be cleaned better - this will help you focus on the problem areas more. I know not everyone is into this but if you are interested they do sell metal dental piks you can use to chip off and remove the plaque buildup above the gum line - its important that you keep the instrument clean and sterile before using it - so dip it in some alcohol first or mouth wash - and don't dig too far into the gum line with it - you don't want to push any plaque further down and of course rinse thoroughly afterwards or use the water pik to make sure any loose plaque is removed.
