When is gum grafting necessary? I am 36. My dentist recently suggested that I see a periodontist. I had scaling and root planning done. It has been two weeks. My gums are already, pink and looking so much better. The periodontist wants to do a gum grafting on tooth 24, and 29. The largest pocket size I have is 5mm. They have been pushing this procedure, since my first visit. Before I even had anything done. I had the uneasy feeling, like they are car salesmen, selling me a lemon. A friend of mine had to see a periodontist, and she had much larger pockets. She even had 13mm! After the scaling and root planning, and many months of good dental care, her largest pocket is 3mm. They never suggested gum grafting in her situation. Should I get a second opinion? Get the grafting done? Its going to cost me roughly $1000 after insurance. So I am going to have to save for awhile.
