Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

This is a follow-up to my previous thread "Severe Dental Pain". To make a long story short, I had made an appointment to have the bad wisdom tooth removed, but the pain got so severe that I ended up having to make an emergency appointment instead. The dentist was able to extract the tooth, which she told me was badly decayed and infected to the root. She did not prescribe an antibiotic, instead telling me the infection should now clear up on its own (advising me to rinse with salt water the next day). That was Monday night, and it is now Wednesday afternoon. The severe pain is thankfully gone, but the area is very tender and seems a bit worse today than it did yesterday. There's still some blood in my saliva, not like there was the first night but still enough to notice.
I wondered how long does it take to recover from something like this. Specifically, how long does it take;
-for the area to clot and stop all bleeding
-for the discomfort to go away
-before I can chew food on that side of my mouth again
I also wonder if I shouldn't have been given an antibiotic. The idea that the infection can clear up on its own seems too good to be true.
Thanks for any advice.

Your immune system has probably fought off bacterial infections before without antibiotics, although many dentists and oral surgeons do prescribe antibiotics as an additional measure.

Regarding healing, expect it to be about a week before you can really chew anything on that side. Eat nutritious soft foods during that time. The soreness should decline gradually over a week or few. The clot should have formed shortly after the extraction, although there may still be some small blood leakage the first day or few.

Re: Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

My adult daughter just recently had a infection in her gums, the Dr. Cut her gums so it could drain. She did not receive a antibiotic. It took close to a week for it to finally feel better.

good luck
