Re: chronic uti

'm sorry for your Mom. I lost my mother 2 years ago to this horrid disease. UTI's are a terrible friend of the dementia patient. You don't mention if she is in a home or if you have her with you. If she is in a home they should be monitoring her and keeping her oh so clean. You also didn't mention if she is in diapers or not. I don't know if she is coherent or not...all of these things make a difference. Keep her on cranberry extract tabs and there are tabs out called yeast buster. They keep the yeast out of her system. She needs to be well hydrated also.

Please feel free to join us on the Alzheimer board here. You will find alot of support and answers to your questions from those of us who have gone through this already.

Re: chronic uti

haga.....the infection is not being cleared by the antibiotic and will return in a few days. A different antibiotic needs to be given.

Many times ongoing infections are due to the glands in the uretha are infected. The glands receive nourishment from adjacent tissues instead of from direct blood supply.

See a urologist for proper diagnosis. If the uretha glands are the problem then an antibiotic creme/ointment placed high up in the uretha will cure the infection. It will take about 3 weeks to completely clear a uretha glands infection.
