Hemorriod surgery, recovery and pain...

I just had hemorroid surgery last Friday, October 30 at 9am, it was quite extensive. 5 blood veins were cut and sealed, and several groupings of interior hemorriods and exterior hemorriods were removed. I opted for Doppler Guided Surgery with a vascular surgeon. Dr. Mark Wu. I must say, I was under about one hour. It was hard coming out of the anethesia. I have some vague recall of the surgery, but nothing upsetting, it was just hard coming out of the anethesia. I had been bleeding a lot prior to the surgery, with each and very bowl movement.

But recovery was fine... there is a lot of pressure like you have to go to the bathroom, but it is normal and from the swelling - so they tell me. I was sent home, with nothing more than a follow up visit, and pain killers (common), from what I have been reading this is the general rule of thumb. But I was NOT in any pain, discomfort, yes. Pain, NO.

This is the second day after the surgery, (Sunday) no pain yet, discomfort and soreness, YES. But a root canal is far worse. I still feel like I want to have a bowl movement, but have not yet passed anything. I opted NOT to sit in the small pan they give you, but rather soak in a salt-water bath 3x a day, and it HELPS alot.

MY bottom is sore, they had tapped a pad, even onto the hair (of my testicals), and it really hurt coming off. If you are hairy shave first, it will make your life easier later and less hurtful.

I have a HUGE black (NOT back and blue, just black) bruise around my anus about 3 inches wide. I guess this is from where they stretch you open. They gave me pain killers (they also constipate you), I took one when I came home (it gave me a nasty headache) and did not like the feel, so I opted for Motrin (Ibprophin) 600 mg/4 times a day and it helps with the interior swelling.

I have been PUSHING fluid, alot. I pee a lot and often. I have kept off my feet and am in bed most of the time, with some light walking around the house. So, far, so good... I have heard the first bowl movement is ROUGH, but so far, NO pain. We will see how it goes from here. They told me NO coffee, but today I had 2 cups and I feel normal again.

I am eatting only soup and soft foods, they said I could eat a 'normal' diet, but am deciding to be cautious and safe - go soft.

I have noticed that when I try to go to the bathroom I am passing small bits and pieces of cut materials, like skin, and small purple-red blood balls, about the size of currents are popping out. I am thinking these are things they cut or tied off. Limited bleeding, just a light amount on the paper, when you pat dry.

That is my experience so far, if anything happens, like some of the horriable things I have read on here happen, I will post another entry. But all in all, my experience has been, I don't want to say 'good', but fairly reasonable and uneventful given the intense and intrusive type of surgery that is involved with this treatment.

I have a great support team with my primary care doctor and his nurse. Dr. Baladi. My thought is that you should research who you want to use, have a great relationship with your primary care doctor, and don't have any expectation of the procedure before you go through it. For, me, so far, so good.

I hope this offers some comfort and insigth to those going through this process. Again I used, Doppler Guided Surgery with a vascular surgeon.

glad things are going well for you. my moms hubby had this very same surgery a few years ago and his surgeon actually tolds him to soak in a tub with the watewr actually 'as hot as you can stand it"???? this was making the pain of course ten times worse for him since it does induce overall swelling and also increases the blood supply to the surgical area too, both pain inducers post op. i told him to just keeop using ice packs on that area til he felt better,this was just based upon what i did after i tore horribly during one of my deliverys with my pregnancys? but it DID help alot for him. while you DO 'eventually' want a much higher bloodflow to that area to aid in healing, right now, ice would really help tons for alot of reasons(mostly pain and the swelling that comes with any surgical procedure). once you get beyond like that first week, then i would make the bathwater a bit hotter, but not til that initial swelling has started to become less and you wont have to feel that aching and throbbing of the increased bloodflow there til its a bit more healed too. i just could not believe what my step dads surgeon told him to do with that hot as you can stand it bathwater crap. he was just suffering horribly whenever he did that. no need to put yourself thru anymore suffering than you have to ya know? but what YOU are doing is a big help with that salt water and NOT hot as you can totlerate stuff.

what i am wondering here just considering how recently this surgery occured? did you actually okay the motrin with your surgeon before you decided to take it? i am only asking since it can increase bleeding simply becasue it has blood thinning capabilitys. if you current painkillers are giving you that type of side effect, just call your surgeons office, i am certain they can replace it with something else that would not give you that side effect. just what did they give you, some type of oxycodone(pretty standard for this type of surgery) or a hydrocodone based med? they CAN simply change that for you if you just let them know about the problems.

the one thing you can also do here to help with that first BM is to try starting a really great product that really works well for constipation called mirilax? i am on narcotic therepy for a host of very painfull conditions and the mirilax has been my back up plan for a few years now. it does help and is a bit stronger than the other laxatives out there. one other thing here, has your surgeon okayed the use of preperation H at all? this just may help speed healing and also before you know you are going to be having that first BM, you can apply some using that applicator on the inside of the body and kind of spread that around on the outter end too. this will help ease that painful experience somewhat.

you 'may' also notice what looks like even more of that bruising in that area you mentioned was kind of black over the next week mostly? this is usually 'just' the overall gravity that is always around us kind of 'pulling down' the more liquid under the skin type thing? this just occurs whenever there is any real 'free' type of fluid or old blood sitting under the skin? and not always like a new bleed or something else? but do let your surgeon just know that you are indeed seeing this(if it even occurs) and what color it appears to be too. just in case.

i do hope things hurry up and heal for ya. i just know how this was for my moms hubby and it was not pleasent. just some helpful tidbits of info i happen to know about and wanted to pass along. but DO ask your surgeon about that motrin if you have not already done so. it just could be contraindicated, thats all. hi dave, I hope you will recover fast.
I also had huge hemorrhoid problems, but I was to afraid to take a surgery..
Luckily I have found a cure, not that I am promoting anything, just saying that it really has helped me get rid of them.
