If you already had a sphincterotomy, then you should know your Sphincter of Oddi is the door valve to the pancreas. Your doctor sounds like he is going to extend his previous incision to make yours a bit wider.
Feel free to read my previous entry.

Thanks for that, does anyone know if the extention is more risky than the sphincterotomy , will the risk be greater for perforation than before.

The risks are with the anesthesia and going into you every time. that doesn't change. But seriously to widen what was done originally might be necessary. It is clearly evident that people need their minor papilla opened too not just the major one done and if you haven't had this done yet, maybe you need to.

Go for a second oppinion at a more experienced pancreas hospital. However this procedure gives one the risk of getting pancreatitis. That's why you need the best of the best working on you, even if you have to leave Scotland and go to Italy for instance !

Re: my surgeon says he'll extend the sphincter of oddi what is that?

Having this condition has taken its toll on me, I have been suffering for two and a half years had 3 ercps, have had Botox twice and a sphincterotomy which caused the perforation and two months later a lap choly as a result of the sod damaging my gallbladder( no stones). It causes terrible pain every day and everything that I eat makes it worse. I am also a piper and can't manage to play my bagpipes any more, as this causes more pain and symptoms i.e. feeling sick, itching, fatigue, pain..., my skin is a very bad colour, so I look very unwell. Do you ever get better from this?, it seems to be very hard to treat. My life is on hold at the moment, I miss my old life very much.
