Exclamation My son just was re evaluated by a ...

My son was evaluated by a neuro psycholgist today. He has been recieving special ed services since the age of 4. He primary diagnoses has always been somewhere along the autisc spectrum disorder and cognitive delays, and ADHD . When very young , he took medication to control his hyperactivity. However, he grew out of the hyperactivity by the age of 13 .
The Regional Center provider was the one who set us up for this in depth evaluation , and felt that it would be benificial . Iwas not too keen on the idea , however , felt that it could be positive once my son hit the age of 18. My son still is in special day classess , and recieving the great services , and did have a school evaluation done last year in the spring, however, I was told the school psycholgist is not able to give diagnoses, even though my son does attend a special school.
Today was the big day, we waited over three months for it. Even though my son had gone to previous Dr's , neurolgists, and psycholgists, he has never gone to one of these specialists before. I actually was feeling very nervous as I was getting ready to take him. It was an out of town drive.
The Dr. talked to me first, than had my son do tests , pencil and paper tests, I was not in the room with him. Because I thought i would be a distraction .
Than I went back to talk to the Dr. afterwards. The Dr. told me , My son has Autistic Disorder.
Rather clearly . He now has a confirmed and concrete diagnoses , that I quite knew all along, but to hear it from a specialist , made me sad.
I also found out that very soon the term "Aspergers Disorder" is going to be taken out of the Diagnostic manual for good.
I would like to share with other parents who are concerned about their own children's development go through your local regional center. As well as your local school district.

You said that you were told that Aspergers Disorder is going to be taken out of the Diagnostic Manual soon. Did your childs doctor say that is will be now called/clasified under Autistic Disorder. Is that a change in the DSM/diagnostic codes used in the Autism Spctrum Disorder?

Looks like there may be a reason to take Asperger's out of the diagnostic manual, along with a number of other conditions. But not for our benefit. Excerpts from the New York Times published online March 6, 2008, an article titled "House Approves Bill on Mental Health Parity":

After more than a decade of struggle, the House on Wednesday passed a bill requiring most group health plans to provide more generous coverage for treatment of mental illnesses, comparable to what they provide for physical illnesses.
. . .
Under the bill, if an insurer chooses to provide mental health coverage, it must “include benefits” for any mental health condition listed in the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association.

So, take it out of the manual, and insurance companies don't have to provide coverage. Sweet loophole, huh?

Wouldn't Asperger's still be included in the Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis?

Mscat - think of it this way; your son is still the the same kid that you love and the diagnosis will allow him to continue to receive the services that he has and needs for his continuing progress. I'm sure now that the nerve-wracking test is over, you're relieved (I sure would be) and can just focus now on progress and improvement. It sounds like you're fortunate to be in a district that provides such good services.

I found this on-line. It seems the change will be from a specific Dx of Aspergers to change to High Functioning Autism, HFA, with different classification under that. I will miss the "label" Aspergers, differentiating it from Autism, although there is Autism Spectrum Disorder that is used frequently also. I think they are just re-adjusting classifications not really removing Aspergers as a legitimate diagnosis just reclassifying it, At least that is what I got from the information I read.
I found this information about a Conference that took lace in Feb 2008:

Autism and Other Pervasive Developmental Disorders Conference (February 3-5, 2008)
