sun damaged skin

i spotted a strange looking mole, and a dermatologist diagnosed melanoma skin cancer in 1995 - a surgeon did rather major surgery on my leg twice, and then i took the interferon chemo treatment for a year. since then i made regular visits to the dermatologists. recently, i found that the doctors are doing much more surgery -- i've been cut so many times, i've lost count. most of the moles have appeared to be rather innocent.
is this a real needed surgery most of the time, or is it mainly a moneymaker for the doctor's office?? sometimes the cuts require stitches, sometimes they don't.
