Question Help! With Thyroid flare-up...

I have Hypothyroidism and I feel really sick right now. It sounds like I am having a flare-up and have gone hyperthyroid... and not sure if I need to see someone right away, or if I should just wait for it to end. I've never had one this bad... I can feel it when it when my thyroid kicks into gear when I get stressed, but this has been going on for a few days now. I feel nauseous, have been having diarrhea, am having anxiety attacks, and can feel my thyroid palpitate... Dr. can't get me in until Monday; should I try someone else? I don't know if I'm in any danger and I don't know how long they "should" last... Any help would be much appreciated!

Re: Help! With Thyroid flare-up...

I am not a doctor and don't want to give medical advice but I sure feel for you - been there so many times. It is miserable. I usually try and ride it out, that is about all you can do until Monday anyway unless it gets real bad. Try some ibuprofen and I keep beta blockers on hand for hyper Hashi's flares. They really help to eliminate the palpitations, anxiety, and sweating.

Hope this helps.

Re: Help! With Thyroid flare-up...

Thank you, Mattiann! I guess I need to be checked for Hashimoto's Disease (?) I haven't been diagnosed with anything; my blood levels were fine when checked... but I have a goiter and all the other obvious symptoms. How long do these flare-ups usually last?

Re: Help! With Thyroid flare-up...

It is hard to say how long. Mine are not as long now as in the beginning since I seem to be going more hypo. I can feel it too when it starts - a sort of swelling and I get hot, well you know how it is and the anxiety is the worst, I also have trouble sleeping.

Gosh I hate this for you. I hate the hyper flares. Are you on any medication? It has been hard for me to settle in on treatment with my hypo/hyper swings.

Let us know how you do. Discuss this with you doctor on Monday. I had no trouble getting the beta blockers for my hyper swings. It really really helps at a very small dose for me. I take propanolol (I hope I spelled that right). It is an old medicine but works well for hyperthyroid swings. Doesn't cure it, but makes life tolerable while you ride it out. Don't expect a whole lot of energy though while taking it. Once the hyper flare is over I have been able to stop that med without any problems. I also have some anxiety meds for when it is real bad. Try not to use them if I don't have to.

Let us know what you find out Monday.

You just have to ride it out. This happens very often with me where i can feel my thyroid buzzing and heart palpitations. Sometimes a better diet will help me.
