Wondering if it could be a thyroid problem?

Hi

First of all I have to thank people for some of their wonderful answers in reply to other questions as some of the replies has helped me a lot. I have quite a few of the symptoms that people have listed.

Over the last year I have been quite depressed. I've lost count of the anti depressants tried but haven't worked. I'm tired, have put on 15 pounds (which my doctor said was leading to the depression, even though I was beginning to be down before the weight gain). The weight doesn't shift no matter how hard I try and my nails are brittle and flaky. I am constantly freezing cold to the extent I have worn gloves in the house.

I also the base of my neck/throat on the right hand side is slightly swollen. The other side is normal and the swelling is squishy and soft rather than hard and in one place. I have read some of the posts on goiters and wonder if it is possible to have the swelling only on one side if indeed what I have sounds like that.

I know that the best answer is from my doctor and I have an appointment next week. But I have been going back and forward to him with little success for months. Apparently I'm just miserable because I'm fat! It would help if I could go in and say could it be this.

Don't expect the "best answer" to necessarily come from your doc when it comes to thyroid disease. Many of us have been undiagnosed for years or even decades because of our doctors inability to figure this out.

See if your doc will run the correct labwork, even if your TSH is "normal". Your symptoms are classic hypo and many docs tend to disregard symptoms.
Ask for a free T3, free T4, TPO and TG antibodies, vitamin D, B12 and ferritin. If your doc refuses I'd look for one who will.

Re: Wondering if it could be a thyroid problem?

I too have a lump in the lower frontal part of my throat. It caused me to have a hyperthroid. You for sure sound like you have thyroid issues that are making you hypo. I would ask your Dr. to send you for an ultra sound on your thyroid. That would show if you have any nodules growing there or even inflammation. After I had my ultrasound I then went for a Throid Scan and that shows how well your thyroid is working. Sometimes blood work will show normal even though you have symtoms. Get the Ultra sound becuase that won't lie. Good luck...I know it can be a long process before things can get figured out.
