Question 5 months baby open heart surgery

Hi,

My sister duaghter who is 5 months only has undergone open heart surgery. Doctor has corrected some veins from lungs to heart that are responsible for blood supply. Today on 12th day, her heart is functioning ok, her body is functioning fine, passing urine as per the doctor is saying. But when doctor try to remove the ventillator, she starts breathing heavily and then doctor puts her back on ventillator. This is going on from last 4 days. Now doctors have given some sleeping tablets to her and they will try slow down the ventillator after 3 days.
My question is what exactly is going on, is there any risk of life to child or is something can be done to rectify this.

Re: 5 months baby open heart surgery

This sounds very serious and unexpected. You might want to stay very vigilant and protective over her and make sure that you ask the doctors all kinds of questions about her care and prognosis!

Don't take anything for granted and, the more that you can stay by her side and insure that she gets decent care and attention, the better the outcome may be!

Regards and best of luck to both you and her!
