Armour?? Is anyone else having these problems?

About 4 months ago I started not feeling well. Being in Perimenopause I though that it was that my hormones were not right. Now, after reading of the change to Armour Thyroid, I think this could be it, here are my symptoms:

Muscle Weakness (when I weight lift) and then really tired and sore afterward
Itchy Skin
Intolerant to hot and cold (alot of hot flashes)
tingling in extremeties
Achy bones, (this is really bad!)
Brittle nails and dry hair
Dizziness
foggy mind
And a general ill and tired feeling

I just had a blood test and here are my numbers

T4 Free- 0.83
T3 Uptake- 32
TSH- 0.420
Vitamin D 25 Hydroxy- 28.4
Also had high Cholesterol LDL124 HDL 68 TTL 221

I workout regularly and eat healthy and am not overweight but I feel horrible! Could this be the switch that Armour made to their product? Also, since you can't get it anymore, what should I switch to? I have a feeling he will want me to switch to Synthroid. I seem to have symptoms of both Hypo and Hyper. You all seem very knowlegable, what do you think???

Re: Armour?? Is anyone else having these problems?

Lots of long-time Armour users have gone hypo since Forrest Labs reformulated it last spring. You will either need to increase your dose or, probably a better choice, switch over to Nature-throid, Westhroid or Canada's Erfa Thyroid.

Also that vitamin D is really, really low. Are you supplimenting? You should be taking up to 10,000 iu of D3 daily with that level

He told me to take 2000 iu, no, when I had the test last Monday I did not supplement. Now I am actually taking 2200 iu, I don't want to take too much.

Re: Armour?? Is anyone else having these problems?

Many docs prescribe 50,000 iu of vitamin D weekly to patients. You can take up to 10,000 iu a day safely. Look up the Vitamin D Council to find out some good info on D. At 2200 iu it's going to take a very long time to replenish your stores and your symptoms could also be related to your very low levels.

Re: Armour?? Is anyone else having these problems?

I became hypo again taking the "new" Armour. After years of successful use, my levels fell to where they were in my first few months of treatment and taking only half the dose... Thus, the new stuff is about 50% less effective than the old was for me.

If you can get additional Armour, try asking for a dose increase of at least 25%, up to 50%, and see if that helps. I was unable to find more Armour in August, so I switched to Nature-throid at that time. I found that 2 grains worked well as a substitute for the 2 grains of old Armour that was previously working. When I recently needed a refill, I couldn't get N-T but found that Armour is once again available in my area. I didn't want to trust Armour and go through all that again, and I couldn't get Nature-throid. So I bought 30 days worth of compounded natural thyroid in the hope that N-T will be available at next refill time. It really irks me to buy the compounded, because it costs $1 a day when N-T costs 25˘ a day... But one does what one has to in times of crisis.

As for the vitamin D, my doc recommended "at least" a 2000/day intake after my level tested at 30. I took it faithfully, but it failed to raise my level in any meaningful way. My next test came back at only 32. On the recommendation found at the vitamin D council site, I upped it on my own to 5000/day, got tested again, and it came back at 56 on a 20-100 range. I told my doc what I'd done, and he said to stick with 5000 indefinitely.
