bursa pain in both hips

Have been to physical tx. and though it provided some relief, I continue to feel as though I'm 80 years old vs. my real age: 53. Have been considering alternative tx. such as acupuncture. Thoughts?

Re: bursa pain in both hips

Acupuncture does help for chronic pain but I've found that some simple stuff really helps with bi-lateral hip bursitis.

I've battled this pain for over 30 years and now it's actually better than ever before. I went and bought a foam pad for my mattress...the kind like temperpedic...but a cheaper variety. It's at least 2 inches thick.....made a huge difference as takes the load off the hip bursa when you lie on your side in bed. Some folks use ice and if you do, use it a lot when the pain hits....ice like mad. Or if you use heat(I do) I tape those Therma Care wraps to the area. Take ibuprofen if needed and you can use up to 4 200mgs pills up to 4 times a day to start with. That's what a prescription dose is. Take that for a week and then lower the dose by 1 pill per dose so go to 3 200mgs dose 4 times a day.....then go to 2 200mgs doses 4 times a day..then start to take it fewer times a day. I lower the dose each week unless the pain returns...then I increase it again until the pain is under control and then slowly start reducing it again.

The trick with chronic bursitis is to treat it aggressively as soon as it starts. Take the ibuprofen even if it stops hurting as it may allow the inflammation to return. But watch your stomach for any signs of pain as that much ibuprofen can cause an ulcer over time. That's why I recommend that you reduce it after a week.

You do know you can get cortisone shots on both hips that will help? If you do that and then use the mattress foam pad and use the ibuprofen and heat or ice, it should really help but unfortunately, it tends to come back. So get ready to treat it aggressively. It really does help.

good luck.................Jenny
