Toe Fusion .. Exercises afterwards

I am a very active individual. I am concerned about balance issues and the possibility of not being able to do many of the exercises I do currently, for example, a lunge or running, since the toe will not bend.

I am interested in knowing your experiences with returning to your active lifestyle and what activities you have ultimately been unable to continue.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Toe Fusion .. Exercises afterwards

Hi bootsthecat, that is a good question and I look forward to the responses you get. I had the fusion done two weeks ago and am already thinking of what it will be like to put weight on my entire foot again. My surgeon said I would be able to jog afterwards. It is also my understanding that the fusion is recommended for active people.

Have you had the fusion yet, or are you schedulled to get one?

Re: Toe Fusion .. Exercises afterwards

Hello, Northwind ... like the name!

My surgery is scheduled for Dec 3rd. No weight for 6 weeks; boot for 6 weeks; physical therapy. I had a joint replacement two years ago and never stopped having pain. The surgeon I have now says I should never have had a replacement so I'm kinda aggravated cuz I've spent the last 2 years getting my balance back and being able to be as active as I like. Bummer.

Very excited you will be able to jog! I hope others will comment for us so we can possibly learn from their experiences!!

Re: Toe Fusion .. Exercises afterwards

Is that no weight for six weeks, then boot for six weeks, for a total of twelve weeks? I was told heel weight from the beginning, and have been mostly able to do that. The first couple of days were touch and go for that. I got my stitches out on Monday and do not have anything but a light dressing on my foot now. I can now put my foot in a Birkenstock which helps because there is snow outside here. I also was told I did not need physio.

When I was getting ready for this surgery I did some research on the joint replacement. There were a lot of gross stories out there. I hope your recovery from the fusion will be easier than the replacement. Will you have a plate put in, or bone graft or anything like that?

I doubt that I actually WILL be jogging. It is just nice to know I could.

I go back to the surgeon on Dec 7th for follow-up. I will get x-rays that day to see if it is doing what it is suppose do do. The incision is healing well, if that counts for anything.

Northwind is my nick on a few sites. I live in northern Canada, well, the near north, not the Arctic, and it seems appropriate.

Yes!! Six no weight bearing in cast; Six in the darth vader boot and then physical therapy. Perhaps our instructions are different as this is the 3rd surgery I am having on my first 3 piggies! And, the surgeon has to un-do what was done before. Actually, I'm okay with anything so long as I get rid of the pain. We're not supposed to have so much of our energy focused on our feet!!!
