Wink Medication

Last week mom's doctor tried her on a new antidepressant. Within 2 days she was more confused and got agitated very easy. So I called the doctors office. I wanted to stop the medication, they wanted urine (urinary track infections can increase confusion) a new montra for me. They got their urine, then allowed me to stop the medication and 3 days later I had my calm and less confused mom back. Stay up on the medication given to your loved one. Plus, trust your gut when it comes to their care.

Re: Medication

UTI tests were standard practice in mum's facility...sent to the lab by the facility itself. Any change in behaviour this was the first port of call, and usually correct.

Re: Medication

Medications do have side effects and you need to be aware of any changes when you start a new medication. Medications that work for some don't work as well for other and medication that have serious side effects for one might have no side effects for another. But you are right... you need to be acutely aware of any changes after starting a new medication. I kept a note book with med changes and changes in behavior or health. That way it was easier to see trends and changes Sometimes memory fades or is jaded as times goes on.

UTIs are common in the elderly and they absolutely can cause confusion and agitation. Mom and Dad have both had periods of very bizarre behavior that turned out to be the result of a UTI. So I am not surprised they requested a urinalysis. That is usually the first place to start explaining unusual behavior in the elderly.

Love, deb

Debbie G. We don't allow regrets here. We all did what we did at the time to the best of our ability. No second guessing yourself now. You were a terrific daughter who took good care of mom.

Chin up!
