Physical Therapy Inquiry: PTTD / Flat Foot Surgery

Hi everyone!

Me-->Calcaneal osteotomy / Kidner Procedure / Gastroc Recession
Oct 1... week 6 post op.

Can you tell me what I can expect with PT? From reading another thread I get the impression that I should expect

1) pain
2) my hoof will swell up like the Goodyear Blimp
and
3) pain

What PT pitfalls / common mistakes should I avoid?

Re: Physical Therapy Inquiry: PTTD / Flat Foot Surgery

I did PT on my first foot. All I can say is be careful. At first I was on restricted (light) PT and it was fine. I did most of the exercises sitting down and I didn't have any problems. But when the dr. lifted the restrictions, they started doing full pt, squats, leg raises and it killed me. I was supposed to go three times a week, but I couldn't do it because of the pain. I told my doctor and he told me to stop. He said that PT is used mostly to regain the mobility of the foot, the strength would come back on it's own (it did), so I stopped PT at that point. On my second foot I didn't have any PT. On the other forum I'm on, some of the people love PT, others don't. I'm in the don't category.

I do think therapy is helpful but please be careful and make sure you see a therapist who has treated post op PTT surgery patients before. Like Dave, I had one who got overly aggressive with me and I ended up with two torn peroneal tendons.
