Unhappy Type 1 of 2??

Okay, I have just been diagnosed with Diabetes. I take 40 units of 70/30 Novolog insulin twice a day. I was hospitalized directly from my dr's office due to my glucose being 595.

after hospitalization for several days, I finally have my blood sugar down to the 140s....I have extreme blurry vision, vasculitis, Parkinson's and rheumatoid arthiritis. My hospital dr says I have Type 2 and my regular doctor says I have Type 1.

Which is it? They think that the diabetes began as steroid induced but due to my weight and family history, it hit full force. I was SO thirsty, urinating ALL the time, lost 25 pounds in 2 weeks and exhausted. Hence, the hospital visit.

Any help you can provide is MOST appreciated.

Re: Type 1 of 2??

There are test that can be done to determine if it is T1 or T2. Typically a GAD antibody test will be positive (but not always) if it is T1. A c-peptide test will also determine your level of insulin production.

The bottom line is that in the end it doesn't really matter what type you are. If you require insulin to keep your blood sugars regulated, then that is what it will take. And whether you are type 1 or type 2 will not really make a difference in how the insulin is delivered. It is nice to know though.

Hope this helps a bit.

I agree with Cora. Get as much info as possible so you can control your blood sugars and keep them as close to normal as possible. You are taking Novolog Mix 70/30 twice a day and the 30% works on breakfast and dinner, please watch your numbers after 2 hours after lunch. Please keep a log of what they are so your doc can help you. He might add a small number of units at lunch so you have coverage there too. This insulin has been tested for once, twice, and 3 times a day. The key is getting as close to normal blood sugars as possible so your body is healthy and can fight everything else that is going on.
