Re: does anybody do well just on synthroid ot t4 med

I know a woman who began taking Synthroid when she was 16. She's a 50-something grandmother now and doing perfectly fine. Most of the hypothyroid people I know take Synthroid. They're fine, too.

Hypothyroid is hypothyroid whether it's due to Hashimoto's disease, radiation, or thyroidectomy, and the treatment is the same for hypoT regardless of the cause. Just because some people don't do well with synthetic T4 and need T3, it doesn't mean everyone needs T3.

hey Midwest! Hope you are doing well. Have you heard anything about Armour going back into production? None of the natural thyroid supplements (Armour, Naturethroid, Westhroid, etc.) are to be found in my area. My doc has me on a synthroid/cytomel combination. I'm doing fine on that, but just wondering if you have heard anything about Armour.

Re: does anybody do well just on synthroid ot t4 med

There is a recent study that shows that there is a percentage of the population that does not have the enzyme to convert T4 to T3 well due to a genetic factor, hence why some seem to do ok on T4-only and some do not.

Since you are going to have 1/2 of your thyroid remaining it's very possible that you will have enough production from the remaining half to do the job and if not, that the addition of T4-only will be enough for you. It's going to be trial and error for a while until you get it figured out. In the meantime have your free T3 and free T4 monitored regularly to see how you are doing. If your T3 levels seem stuck in the low range and you have hypo symptoms then consider finding a doc who will add T3 to your meds.
