Post Anybody with PCOS???

I was just wondering if there was anyone out there with Polycystic Ovary Snydrome and what your symptoms are and how you are being treated. I was reading my Prevention magazine today and there was an article on it. I've been so frustrated lately because of my inability to lose weight. Then I started reading the article and I can identify with many of the symptoms. My periods are VERY irregular, many times I'll skip a month or so. I can't seem to lose even a modest amount of weight despite my efforts. They say that dandruff is even a symptom; and thought I'm embarrassed to admit it; Head & Shoulders has been making $$ off of me for a while now. And this is only in the past year and a half or so. I also carry my excess weeight in my abdomen; yet another symptom. I'm seriously considering making a dr. appt for myself. I haven't had a physical exam in "who knows how long" so even if they don't find anything; it won't hurt me. I should also get my cholesterol and things like that checked now anyhow--I am pushing 32 and never had these tests done. I'm planning on calling the dr as soon as I'm done here. I was just wondering if anyone has it and could give me some info. Thanks in advance!!!

well, I scheduled my appt; but couldn't get in for 2 weeks. I'm not upset though; it's not something that has to be done immediately.

The more I read about this "syndrome" the more I think, OMG--that's me. Actually, this exact website has alot of info on it. I read that it usually runs in families that have a history of such problems including diabetes and ovarian issues. My Dad has just in the past year or so developed Adult Onset Diabetes. His mom died of ovarian cancer and my sister (though i don't think they ever really diagnosed her) cannot have children. She's always had problems with her period and excruciating pain in her ovaries. It just seems to fit. I've also read that if untreated; it can lead to endometrial cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Even if I'm just being paranoid--it's been a long time since I've had a good physical; I'm long overdue. Plus, I need all this bloodwork for Nursing School anyway.

This website also had an article on how you can control it by altering your diet and gave good examples on how to calculate the calories your body needs and the percentage (and actual grams) of carbohydrates. I think I'm going to follow it for a while and see what happens. It's still low carb (150 grams a day for me) so it shouldn't be too hard to follow. I'm praying it makes a difference!!!
Thanks for your reply Andrea; I know I can count on you!!!

Unhappy Re: Anybody with PCOS???

Hi i have pcos and i am 23 years old. i have been trying for a baby for just under a year. i was referred to a fertility specialist but because of my partners problems as well we will have to undergo IUI treatment i.e injectable hormones assisted conception. The waiting list is 18 months! So feeling sad Ihave had an ultrasound scan which showed the enlarged overies. Iam also having symptoms which may mean i am insulin resistant but i am of normal weight. But i get hunger pangs and thirst frequently and one dr suggested metformin but i dont want 2 lose weight My periods are all over the place but one dr said may be b/c i was on the pill for 2 years b/fore. Ifeel angry as would never have gone on the pill if i thought would result in all this!!! Sorry i havent really brought any good news to the forum! Hope someone will identify with me and bring me some hope and good news as really feeling like no hope. Told only have 10%chance of pregnancy
